And I'm assuming parties would be able to retrieve the remaining items for their own use or trade-ins?

Shop ID#6 sells:

1 #ID6 to #ID23 for 12 gold
1 #ID39 to #ID25 for 43 gold
1 #ID32 to #ID25 for 12 gold
1 #ID6 to #ID24 for 12 gold

Shop ID#6 buys:

1 #ID20

By the way, character ID#22 has 2 swords. I thought I read that characters could only carry one weapon? Or are fighters exempt from that rule (which I would find plausible of course.)

The backend is coded in Symfony (PHP Framework). For the 3D client I will be using Unity 3D.

Using CLI or do you handle everything through the browser? I've been developing my homage to Mystic Arena,  Fight or Die (working title) without a framework and using the browser, but let me tell you, waiting for a Battle Royale with 64 entrants to finish takes an awfully long time. :p

Damn, that ID#2 should have been an ID#6. Ah well, that'll teach me to double check everything.

If new vs used has no drawback, then it makes sense for characters to always attempt to buy second hand goods, which just seems odd.

Point taken.

But then you also need the effect of new vs used. We have items that provide a +1 bonus, so now do we need the system to handle fractions? Or are second hand items simply more likely to break once that is added in.

I'd view it at a more abstract level, used items are simply less valuable than new ones. You could involve breakage, but that would make it a lot more cumbersome I think. And magic bonuses shouldn't depend on stuff being used or new, so fractions wouldn't be a problem there.

Groups have also selected their next quest already, but not where to shop. Maybe this is an interesting step inbetween? Rumours what quests are around, but no knowledge if they will stop at your shop or not...

That would make it more fun to try and guess what they might be needing, depending on the quest.

Well, item quality doesn't need to be very involved. A simply flag (0 for new, 1 for used) would be enough to distinguish between new and used items. But yeah, trade-ins would be a nice touch even without that. :)

If I can ask, what are you coding game's core engine in, Tom?

Fair enough on the fabrication, knowing your core business is actually pretty damn important for any game.

Trade-ins would of course also lead to quality levels for items, but that would only deepen the subtle complexities of gameplay. After all, that might open up the way for second-hand shops like "Crazy Knutt's House of Slightly-Used Swords". ;)

My first impression is that the novel angle on the whole Fantasy Quest thing really tickles me. I like games that offer me a new spin on comfortable subject matter, or let me experience it from a new angle. :)

Glad to be part of this playtest.

  • I'm assuming right now there's no morality construct in place in the game. Perhaps parties could attempt to steal items if they're low on funds and desperate enough (i.e. their need is high enough?), and they're of sufficiently questionable morals?
  • And leading on from that, maybe it's interesting to give players the option of banning certain parties from their shop?
  • Will parties be selling loot they get from quests, and if so, is it an idea for shops to set what they would and would not buy from parties?
  • Perhaps shops can start fabricating their own items by adding sections like "smithy", "armourer's workshop" etc? This would of course necessitate some sort of source of resources

Will amend the post to include IDs, no problem. And I'll take a page from James for future posts.

Ah. Well, assuming that comes out of the same 1000, the inventory would then become:

3 healing potions (ID 32 - 30 Gold)
1 Quaff of Power (ID 38 - 40 Gold)
1 Quaff of Speed (ID 39 - 40 Gold)
1 Quaff of Resilience (ID 40 - 40 Gold)

Section: Weapon Racks (ID 1 - 200 Gold)
2 Axes (ID 6 - 20 Gold)
2 Swords (ID 9 - 40 Gold)

Section: Armour Dolls (ID 2 - 200 Gold)

I would be that Facebook guy. I'm the admin of the Mystic Arena fan page. Anyway, I had no time to get on the forum during the weekend unfortunately...

As mentioned on Facebook, the shop's name is Solid Simon's World O'Stuff

As for the description:

Solid Simon's shop seems to be far bigger than you'd expect before going in. Inside, he's obviously tried to instill a sense of trust in his customers, with badly faked framed customer testimonies such as "I only managed to defeat the Wraith Lord of Addhur because Solid Simon helped me outfit our party! - Ghurrbad, Westlands Barbarian Warlord", and "If you can't find it here, you don't need it - Orghal the Mad, Priest of Senfa the Dread Lord of Gibbering Madness" hung over the counter. Cheap oak panelling lines the walls and an old chandelier casts a broken crown of light over the assorted weapons, armors and other wares Simon has for sale. He's tried to create departments for the various categories of stuff he has for sale, but he's obviously not good at the upkeep. Swords mingle with ready-packed meals, potions lie scattered across several bins, and god knows how many rings can be found if you bow down low enough to look beneath their display stand.

Inventory:

1 Ring of Nimbleness (150)
2 Scrolls of Power (60)
2 leather armours (20)
1 +1 leather armour (40)
5 mana potions (50)
5 healing potions (50)
2 Quaffs of Power (80)
2 Quaffs of Speed (80)
1 Quaff of Resilience (40)
1 Ring of Protection (120)
2 +1 Axes (80)
1 +1 Staff (50)
3 Swords (60)
4 Knives (20)
