Dwilight / Allison's Eulogies
« on: April 11, 2013, 05:14:47 PM »
Pierre was my second character, after a first one in Atamara. Morek was dirt poor back then, and it was impossible to get by with the 2-3 gold per week my Ashrak estate gave. Once my starting unit was killed I had no gold, no troops, and not even enough honour to become a courtier. Allison was Duchess then and she handed me gold, but not in a haughty "I'm rich, you're not, now go fight my battles" way I have seen elsewhere. She took the time to know what my character wanted, and helped him achieve it. Sure, she would call back later on to ask for favors when she needed them, but she truly cared in the first place. On an IC level my character always kept a soft spot for her because of that, even when she descended into madness he remembered he would be nothing without her. On an OOC level I knew getting an interaction with Allison may be the best thing to happen to anyone  who may find themselves a bit bored by the game, as she would lead them into the inner circles of power quicker than anywhere else.

This is the end of an era for Dwilight. It's quite sad, really.

Then again, for some reason, I can't get this song out of my head:

Development / Region Economy rebalance
« on: March 20, 2013, 01:39:31 AM »
It looks great! I have a few questions:

Quote
However, overall, there will be around a 25% food surplus on each continent,

Can we be told if that corresponds to an increase or a decrease? There was a comment in the food rebalance thread that said the continents were not standardized in that respect, can we get a rough break of how that will play out by continent?

Also generally, will this yield relatively more or less food to the cities and townslands compared with the rurals?

You can expect to see this rebalance coming live in the beginning of April.

Please wait at least for the 2nd to avoid confusion..... but you probably thought of that.

Helpline / Building many temples in one region
« on: March 15, 2013, 04:47:42 PM »
In one realm I am in, the idea has been emitted to ask the Lord of one particular region to build a temples of all religions present in the realm in order to create a "center of religious tolerance". He would do this by joining every religion in turn and leave it after building the temple.

This is not on a SMA continent. Nevertheless, the idea seems iffy to me. Joining a religion should be more serious than that.

Can I get opinions on whether this should be allowed or not?

Helpline / Using foreign banks
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:41:14 AM »
I kinda-sorta remember to have used in the past a feature where you could pay 50 gold in a foreign city to use all of its facilities (banks and repair shops) for a day. Yet my character is in a city and I can't find it. Am I looking in the wrong place? Has it been removed?

Feature Requests / Continent wide messages for successful protests
« on: January 15, 2013, 10:21:20 AM »
Title:

Continent wide messages for successful protests

Summary:

Send a continent-wide game message when a ruler is successfully protested out of office.

Details:

The game sends a game wide message when a rebellion is started. A protest is really a smoother form of rebellion, and a ruler being deposed is international news that should be shown to everyone.

Benefits:

Gives the ability to players in different realms to get involved in the internal affairs of other realms, encourages inter-realm politics.

Possible Exploits:

None; the information is already available. This brings successful protests to the same level as rebellions.

Helpline / Problem on the mobile site?
« on: December 04, 2012, 08:44:04 AM »
On m.battlemaster.org, I see two huge black rectangles on the top and bottom of all pages. The top rectangle partially overlap the menu bar and the bottom one hides the status bar. They sometimes also hide entire letters.

This appeared yesterday, I'm pretty sure it sure it was not there prior to 7am server time monday. It does not always appear, but when it does hitting reload does not help. The browser is safari on iOS.

Anyone else sees this?

Background / Historical Duke/Margrave Dynamic
« on: October 16, 2012, 02:55:27 PM »
Sure, if you're re-organizing your realm. But if you've just conquered a new stronghold or a townsland, it effectively isn't 'you' that's doing the promoting - another Duke gets to decide who goes there and then you promote them.

It'd be like Edward III conquering more of the Aquitaine and then the Duke of Norfolk getting to decide who the Duke of the Aquitaine was.

No, that's my point about duchies not being geography based. There doesn't need to be a Duchy of Aquitaine. There needs to be a Count of Bordelais and a Count of Bayonne and a Count of Angoulême, because the land needs to be ruled, and all these Counts must owe allegiance to a Duke, but this Duke could very well be the Duke of Norfolk or Suffolk or Southsoutheastfolk. It doesn't matter.

If the King of England want to name the Count of Bordeaux Duke of Aquitaine, he can do that. If the King of England wants to name the count of Northumberland Duke of Aquitaine, he can also do that, but what he does is he gives the title of Duke of Aquitaine to the Count of Northumberland, so at first the Duchy of Aquitaine is composed of a single region, Northumberland. Then he orders the Counts of Bordeaux, Bayonne and Angoulême to travel to England and swear allegiance to the Duke of Aquitaine. At some point in the future, he may even sell/give Northumberland to someone else. At no point is the Duke of Norfolk allowed a say in this.

Helpline / Unfortunate misclick
« on: October 13, 2012, 04:26:41 PM »
I accidentally unpaused a character that I do not intend to play at the moment. The problem is that I now have more active characters than I am allowed, but I am not allowed to immediately re-pause the unpaused character.

How long does the restriction last? If it's only 24hrs I'll wait and re-pause the character I don't want to play, but if it's more like 14 days then I'll have to pause a character that I actually want to play, and that would be unfortunate.

Dwilight / There are rich pirates in D'Hara

Travel Report   (1 hour, 5 minutes ago)
During your travels, you are suddenly attacked by pirates.
You draw your sword, but you are outnumbered and stand little chance. The pirates take 1514 gold coins and race away in their boat.

Very rich.

Anecdote aside, I thought robbers and pirates were disabled for priests? It's not like we can hire a unit to protect ourselves. In any case, the probability must be pretty low because I've travelled all over the place for years and this is the first time this has happened to me.

BM General Discussion / Live bug fixing
« on: August 08, 2012, 09:08:47 AM »
Today, at approximately 8:50 AM server time, I was busy entering a bug on the bugtracker, about not being able to pay ransom. As I entered the bug, I clicked again to be sure I described correctly which php page I was on.

And the bug was fixed as I was entering its ticket.

Thank you, anonymous bug-fixer.

Looks amazing!  :D

Will the values currently at zero only accumulate from now on, or will they eventually use currently registered data to evaluate their current value?

Helpline / Pausing changes
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:51:58 AM »
Quote from: Anaris
A change to the way pausing works has been implemented today (and will go live soon). From now on, if you plan on going on vacation (or otherwise leaving BM) and returning at a specific time, you can pause with a Vacation Pause. This will automatically unpause your character at the time you specify, and while you are paused, you will retain many more of your positions and other amenities.

If you are going away for an indeterminate amount of time, and are not sure when you will return, or are not sure if you will ever return, you can put your character into Cold Storage. This will make it as if your character was gone for good (losing guild ranks, army sponsorships, etc), while still keeping them around for you to unpause later if you choose to do so, and retaining skills (though these will slowly deteriorate), honour and prestige, and gold on hand. Auto-pausing due to inactivity will also put characters into Cold Storage.

This has not been updated on the wiki. Has anyone tried this, or any dev willing to share on which positions will be retained? Specifically, I will soon leave for a ten-days vacation, and wonder if this option would allow me to keep my Lordship/Dukeship.

Thanks.

BM General Discussion / What limits your unit size?
« on: June 10, 2012, 11:08:54 AM »
I'm just genuinely curious. I hit my H/P limit regularly now, and I wonder if it's an effect of an increase in gold available through the new estate system, or if it's just a coincidence.

Feature Requests / Overhaul of character creation process
« on: May 22, 2012, 03:23:03 PM »
Title: Overhaul of character creation process

Summary: Create new character directly with their own estates.

Details:

Instead of the current duchy-centric one, why don't we show new characters a list of open estates and allow them to pick one, spawning them right there, in that realm and all? That would give free estates more of a "please come in" meaning, and it would also save newcomers from the trouble of coming into a realm, asking for an estate, having to travel there, etc. etc. etc.

If someone writes this up as a feature request, I'll immediately approve it.

Benefits:

-New character would save the hassle of travelling to their chosen location and start there instead
-When choosing your new character, seeing the list of available estates is meaningful information

Possible Exploits:

-This may create an OOC race for realms to always have profitable estates available to attract more new players (this is not necessarily a bad thing, but is slightly metagamey)
-Allowing players to choose exactly their starting location may allow badly intended people to rapidly create one character, wreak havoc, and then pause. For example, you could create a new character right in the region where your enemy is, set your unit to murderous to wreak havoc, and then pause. But that's clearly abuse and is probably possible anyway if your set your mind to it, so should not be too high of a concern.
