Development / Re: Realm size control
« on: March 24, 2015, 03:51:50 PM »
I'm ok with nuanced, but i also like the blunt force trauma approach: no lord = no region. Its ridiculous that realms can control and harvest the resources from an absurd amount of regions without the nobles to actually manage the regions. Morek and Riombara are both perfect examples of how realms have pushed this beyond the extreme, into the absurd.

So, yea, add some influences to help drive realms toward a more even expansion. But also add in the blatant restriction that without a lord, the region will eventually go rogue.

This problem never occured when the player/region ratio was high, and it will disappear by itself if it climbs back.

In the meantime, it is important to give all realms a way to expand. If you make it impossible for a realm to expand, then they will buy militia and turtle down. There's little else they can do.

You do not want to fight a horde of peasants after winning a battle or before a major battle. Battles are so close you can't afford to take unnecessary damage :/

In the current situation, you're right. And that's perfect! In the presence of roughly equal forces, you don't want to amplify any small difference that may appear, otherwise the war islands would be short-lived and not much better than a dice roll.

Except peasants are so strong you do not want to try depopulating a region without bringing your whole army :o

So you can do that by bringing your whole army.

It only means that you can only depopulate a region per week or so. Sure, you can't destroy half a realm because you won one big battle as you could before, but it's not like it became impossible to kill peasants.

I don't pretend to know everything that went on within Arcaea leading up to the secession, but it's painfully clear that you mishandled him. I was in communication with Claudio intermittently throughout, and there wasn't the slightest hint of him being dissatisfied with Arcaea until you tried to deny his right to secede at the time of his choosing. His duchy would still be part of Arcaea now if you had handled that situation properly.

And, as you say, it's down to inexperience. And frankly, I think anyone expecting a player who's never had a ruler character before to take rulership in Arcaea of all places, in the middle of the war that was already heating up, and get everything to come out perfect, is delusional. Given that you've never had a ruler before, I'd say you're probably doing pretty well.

But that doesn't change the situation IC, or make the criticisms I've made of how Dawn handled things any less valid. It just explains why they happened.

I am going to come out and say that I am very, very glad that Arcaea has split up following IC events that have arisen organically from IC actions, rather than in an organized OOC fashion.

After the countless forum posts advocating for splitting Arcaea for OOC reasons, I think it's in very bad taste to come back and say "it's your fault, if you had played better it wouldn't have happened".

Not by me, though I can't recall if Tom's commented on it.

It's just something I haven't gotten around to yet.

OK, thanks. I'll figure out a way to work around it for now.

I currently see the following message:
Quote
With your current unit and/or entourage, it would cost 81 gold and take 13 hours to procure and board ships.
I though this meant a two-turn embarking time, but it seems I am forbidden to board a ship at all. Is this intended behaviour?

I though any religious Elder could be invited to give a sermon, but it seems a "not reknowned enough" limitation exists. What is it related too? Reknown usually is linked to prestige, but that seems a weird metric.

Ven ASKED TO BE EXECUTED. We granted her wish. If that request was IC or OOC, I don't remember. It wasn't an act against your religion, it was granting a wish to a priest who was conducting hostile activities anyways.

Whether the request was IC or OOC, it remains legitimate for surviving members of the religion to see it as a hostile act. Again, and I repeat myself, it doesn't matter whether that characterization is fair. It makes IC sense, that's all that counts.

Why was it ok to close our temple in Corsanctum but not for us in Storms end?

It's not supposed to be fair. It's supposed to be an opportunity for more war!

Since I've been back on Dwilight I've seen:
  • Frequent battles
  • Uncertain outcomes
  • Realms safe in their existence (no one is roflstomping their way to anyone's capital)
  • Actual deep-seated RP rationales for being at war
  • Both internal and external dynamics
  • A non-blocked horizon where no one can be 100% certain what the maps will look like in 6 months
  • People with original ideas about what the map should look like and the willingness to fight for it
Which is all good. I don't get why either side is complaining. Keep fighting! This is what BM should be like.

BM General Discussion / Re: Seasons
« on: January 15, 2015, 03:41:38 PM »
Things like rivers freezing just aren't going to happen. It requires new code, and then you have to start considering, which rivers etc though I suppose that since travel times all increase we generally assume that all continents are located such that they have European style winters.

Here's a simpler proposal on travel times which would not require new coding: instead of making travel longer across the boards, make it so that travel times are longer in mountain and hills in winter only, longer in plains in autumn only (due to the mud), and longer on sea in the spring (let's say... icebergs. yeah, icebergs. Or sea monsters).

That way you have a cycle, but you have no season where every single way is blocked.

Far East Island / Re: Attack on Sasrhas!

If you can find a way to make the Far East Island dynamic and fun without breaking up Arcaea into multiple realms, I am all for that. I'd be happy to hear suggestions.

Arcaea just declared war against its two closest allies. These are the realms that geographically encompasses Arcaea's core regions. They're two regions away from Arcaea's capital. They also have a combined military strength higher than Arcaea. There's real danger there.

Have you ever seen the Cagilan Empire declare war against Talerium and Tara?

It's been only three months since the last war ended. There seems to be good IC politics brewing with new grudges being established. New wars are being launched. Give it a chance.
