Feature Requests / Re: Judicial Punishments with Teeth

Maybe this means making you pay for fines out of your family gold.
Thoughts?

At first sight, I liked this idea, but there is a possible loophole: people who ask the Judge to fine them to get gold instead of asking for family support.

BM General Discussion / Re: How did you learn about BattleMaster ?
« on: March 19, 2011, 11:04:16 AM »
I saw your sig on Slashdot.

"Back in beta (too many new features): BattleMaster"

The lure of something in beta with loads of new features was extremely compelling :-)

I saw the same sig. I checked it out (I was looking for some non-life-invading browser game at the time) and I also saw that it was made by the same guy who made that site about DeCSS, so it was probably worth checking out.

I think I remember showing lemuria.org to friends to show them the DeCSS haiku, but I can't find them there anymore. Maybe I'm just confused.

BM General Discussion / Re: Religions

What is the official reason why we would want to avoid public disclosure of religious preference?

I'm guessing because religions like the Blood Cult and the Chaos Requiem actually add to the game experience, and this would be their death warrant.

Do you also sell to more questionable people? ;)

Yes! Even chemists sometimes!

and the true meaning of "harmony", "balance" and "enlightenment".

Don't forget the argument about whether the stars stand in a line or in a triangle. Who needs an afterlife debate?

The important thing is there is debate. It doesn't have to be about afterlife and creation myths. You can be original about religions.

I am originally from Québec, although I have been living in Switzerland for close to 6 years now. I just turned 30. I was a Physics student until I graduated last year, now I work selling lasers to other physicists.

BM General Discussion / Re: Religions

The problem then is that the religion ends up entirely constrained by the founder; that's not going to help people engage with religion.

One problem I have with religion with a large amount of lore on the wiki is that I feel I may end up having to read all of it, then simply apply it as it already defines everything. Simple religions, on the other hand, allow more IC arguing about the religion itself. It ends up being defined over time, and evolving as the characters change.

Come on, from what I've read in the wiki Sanguis Astroism is one of the faiths that offers nothing for you to grab on to(no rituals, no concept of afterlife, barely anything comparable to gods, barely any concrete teachings, nothing on how we maybe came to be..you know, those important bits most religion tend to try to answer). Having been a part of it for a while all you did was scheme politics there. Sure, it's successful, but far from being a well rounded religion as far as actual teachings go(even Darkanism and Estianism have more to offer in that regard).

On the other hand, SA does offer something for you to look to when deciding how to act: actual stars which change from day to day.

SA does have pretty intense theological debates, but they tend to focus on extremely minor points. Part of the reason is that these are the points we can actually argue about and bring in-game arguments that make sense.

After all, if one character says "The gods have talked to me, and they said they have created the world in an epic battle three thousand years ago", then what can you say to argue? Unless the BM gods are actually OOC talking to you, there is nothing to grasp to. You can make up a whole mythos, but you just make it up yourself. A minimalist mythos allows things to develop by themselves.

Development / Re: New Player Retention

I'm also glad to know Tara is better, it's also where I started and it was awful back then.

I always though the problem stood with making mentors a subclass. It makes no sense, as being mentor is all about a willingness to answer questions, not about any in-game ability. Why can't we play an ambassador/mentor? Or a hero/mentor?

In Morek, there is a guild called the "Academy of Noble Conduct". We try to get new nobles to join it, so that they can ask questions and get answers.

I'd gladly be a mentor, but IC, this would require dropping my ambassador subclass, and I don't want to do that! I think a guild is a much better setup.

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Feel free to send messages to the whole realm in Morek. You'll get answers.

Morek tried to pull off the same kind of thing with Aquilegia, the idea being to send a Morekian to serve in Aquilegia's council. In the end, the problem was no one wanted to do it! People don't really want to leave a realm they like.
