Vix really needs to vote to become Tyranny and chose Archibald as it's absolute monarch.

Tbf I've seen maybe two OS advies switch realms like that and one was justified by other IC reasons.

If adventurers are not to be removed from the game (which I would strongly like, but never really expected the dev team to agree to), I would like this alternate compromise:

  • Make adventurers require a regular character slot

No more freebies. It was clear from this attack that these advies are the alts of players who all work together, mostly from the same realm, and that they use their adventurers (on BT as well as everywhere else) as extensions of their nobles.to

Make people choose between advies or nobles for any given continent.

Furthermore, make it so that characters cannot use ANY scrolls without a certain level in spellcasting. Say, 15%. And make advies start with a lower level than nobles. Force people to train at academies before they can start using them. This would help make advy deaths more meaningful, because right now, you anyone can create an advy, within a few days make him travel to his desired realm, and then just benefit from the 16 real time hour pool to blast enemies away.

Beat the drums blow the horns, I agree with Chenier. I think it's a beautiful idea!

It is all around problem fixer.

Advies are not played the way they are supposed to be? When they are not free secondary chars they will be.

Advies game is not meaningful? With less of them it will be.

Magic is too commonplace? Less advies = less magic.

Yes I know the major argument against it - less density. But I don't think it is accurate. I propose this - let's introduce it on test islands and see if it affects density.

If it works then this relatively simple fix will fix more problems than I can count. It'll save dev time and improve the player experience and prevent most of abuses at the same time.

Bronnen - I agree with you on accident messages being bugged screwing you over. And since consequences were this dire there ought to be some sort of intervention, because noone can say if all that would've happened if it weren't for this bug. Perhaps you would arrest those advies in time.

As for the horde - it wasn't summoned. Most of it happened to be around.

As for using advies in this way and trusting them with such power... well I guess nobles use commoners to do their bidding all the time. I agree however that trusting them exclusively with something like that and not sending even one noble to keep them in check should come back to bite them in the ass.

I guess it's mainly fault of isolation and lack of interaction. It was a big endeavor, normally you should catch wind of it before it happened.

It's just that BM design does not fit it's current playerbase. Especially on BT. And we're all screwed by this but I am certain that taking away from people is only going to make this worse.

Losing a realm is always a sad experience. However when I try to put myself in your shoes I find it hard to replicate how you feel about it. I would have no problem if similar thing happened to any of the realms I play in. I would most certainly prefer it to stagnation and isolation. And I would absolutely prefer it to any not IC action, any OOC admin/dev/titan intervention.

I can't really recall people quit playing BM over IC actions. If it's something done by players to players it's fair game. Most of people floating away from BM do so out of losing interest due to inactivity or admin/dev/titan action ruining their gameplay.

Ok, I asked several times and always got the same answer, but I want to have it on a record here and coming from a dev:

If the same thing was done using noble characters instead of adventurer characters - would it be ok?

I agree with Chenier here. Advies being used as alts and not as separate characters is the root of the problem here.

Anaris, I play battlemaster for almost two years now and never have I ever said a bad word about devs. You guys always had (and continue to have) my utmost respect for all you do to keep it afloat.

But

That was a bad call. And saying things like:

Basically, look to the people who organised this, because they're why you can't have nice things.

is another bad call.

How many times have I heard that single-region realms should not exist and that people should work together and interact more.

But when they do work together and interact more and the effect is destruction of a single-region realm you punish the entire advy playerbase for it.

If you're going to disable advies from doing anything any time they do anything you may just as well do as Chenier says and remove advies altogether.

Taking stuff away from players, stuff players enjoy, due to isolated events is never a good idea. Especially since it doesn't fix the part that could be perceived as wrong in this entire event. If several people would decide to wipe out Bara'Khur or Angband or... whatever 1/2 region realms there is on BT - they could still do it, just not by using advies.

There are several ways to fix advy game from being abused in such a way, but disabling advies from using magic is not one of those ways.

Development / Adventurers No Longer Using Scrolls - Discussion

This is something I feel strongly about, hence the discussion topic.

I'll say what I have to say in points:

  • I am not aware of advies being used as (effective) weapons of war, so I assume it happened on East Continent. IIRC magic was supposed to be nerfed on EC and Colonies. It would fixed the problem better than the current "solution"
  • On Dwi and BT advies should be allowed (to a degree) to be weapons of war.
  • Even if advies are used effectively in war, I'd say there is a damn big counterbalance mechanic... as in they can be friggin killed! Capturing advies is like taking candy from a baby. If someone is ready to try and swing the fate of one battle/one region (doubtful) for the price of losing their character - ok, I guess it's a fair deal.
  • Disabling advies from using magic takes one of the more fun (most fun?) aspects of advy game away. I know most people treat entire advy game as a gig to get artifacts/scroll for their pals, but there are few of us who actually enjoy it.
  • Since I've learnt more about what prompted this... my question is - has anything like that happened ever before? Did it require a lot of people actively working together? Have it broke the stagnation on the island a bit? Have it rid us of a single-region new player death-trap realm? Could it be done by non-advies? If you answer yes to at least one of those questions (or no to the first one) then banning advies from magic was overreacting.

EDIT - Forgot to summarize.

Summary: Advies should not be disallowed to use magic.

Strategically it is not a problem to take all those regions in as little as a couple of months. However our density would have us smashed by rogues all the way back to peninsula. If you want more regions you need more nobles. There's no way around it.

I'll kick the snowball down the hill when I have a bit more time for BM in 2-3 weeks. For now I can only afford to look at it intently.

eyes the snowball intently

Gabanus is right. It's very much possible to translate his script to php, js or anything web-usable really. In fact with all the variables already there for battle reports it shouldn't even be that much effort to make it part of bm official. And since it already uses wiki heavily I don't see why not.

Temples. We need temples abroad to grow the number of nobles in the religion. Without it all other efforts are pointless.

Same thing goes for the inquisition. Do we even have any guildhouses outside SOS?

Something that will cause much fun in the future just happened earlier today and noone noticed. I feel like I stumbled upon Peter Dinklage in white-walker make-up (that's not GoT spoiler btw, just a metaphore/simile/something).
