I really do enjoy Tribes. I didn't pay for anything... and I got almost all of the unlocks I want.

I'm the !@#$%^& flag runner INF with a !@#$ty red spinfusor, and I do a pretty good job at it.

If you live in the US, MCM is an affiliated distributor with Element 14. They offer cases, and much more, including many of the products that will work with it simply for that fact. It's smart; they make no money off the Pi directly, but should make plenty of indirect profit (including shipping in some cases, but mostly from the sales of accessories.)

Raspbian is a very efficient Debian ARM_HF install. With the 512 MiB version, you should be able to handle a more standard ArmHF flavor of Debian; however I still recommend Raspbian as it is optimized for the Pi. It comes with LXDE natively, as well as programming environments and more.

The 512 MiB version could easily be used as a small/portable workstation; people have done a lot of really cool things with them. There's webservers running off of two of them and external harddrives, for instance. (One handles one set of operations, the other another. That's with the 256 MiB version though; now with 512 it'd be even better).

They're powerful for $35, but don't overestimate. You'll probably underestimate it, actually.

They also make great, inexpensive HTPCs. Retrogaming + Great HD streaming? Yes please.

I need to figure out a decent PERL repository that works with it, though; CPAN doesn't like Debian, or Debian doesn't like CPAN. Which sucks. I should also learn Python and figure out the differences, if any, present in QT vs cpp.

So! I did a search, and I didn't see another thread about it. Though, forgive me if I somehow didn't search for the correct terms (I figured raspberry and pi would do it. :p )

Anyway... It's a $25-$35 GNU/ARM based computer. There's a $25 one with no Ethernet and only one USB port, with 256 MiB of memory, and there's the much more recommended $35.00 version, with two USB ports, an Ethernet port, and 512 MiB of memory. Both run the same processor, an ARM6 clocked natively at 700 MhZ, but with the update clockable to 1000 Mhz without voiding the warranty.

They're fun little things; they have a pretty good GPU with the videocore4, but the XLDE isn't GPU accelerated yet, so using the desktop can feel a bit slow at times. Chromium (browser) compiles and runs well; I've found a YouTube player that works with OXMPlayer from the command line well (allowing GPU acceleration!)  I use Raspbian on mine, but I'm intending to get a second SD card to play with RaspBMC.

It'll be great for retro-style console gaming, though, if you're into that. It's incredibly portable, too, especially with a 'dumb' powered USB hub (that is, it sends power without waiting for a data response) so that you can power it through that. Get a portable PAL/NTSF/Brazil PAL portable television with component or HDMI video, and you're good to go! I took some pictures with my currently crowded desk (I updated my Magic the Gathering deck) of what I use for it, but unfortunately.... I can't find my camera cable right now. I did, however, find my second SDCard.. The one I was going to use for standard operation. So I'll have to put the updated image on that, and put RaspBMC on the faster one. Or maybe I'll just do it the other way around. I'll have to do some tests to see if the Class 4 vs Class 10 really makes a difference in this case.

I can suggest components, know places that deliver fairly quickly (and restock fairly quickly) in the United States at least; overseas (from the United States) suppliers (even though it's manufactured in UK/China) seem to always be out of stock, though.

I have for mine:
A compact Wireless Keyboard (cost me about 6.99), a portable USB optical mouse (About 4.99), a portable ~7 inch (~17.75 cm) LCD TV, and a 16GB class 10 and a 16GB Class 4 SD card. Right now I'm sharing my desktop's internet connection with it; I really want to get a wireless adapter for it, but that'll require a USB hub... so I need to find a dumb one, like I said, to keep it requiring one plug when possible.

Pics when I can.  It's a neat little mini workstation/youtube viewer, since I'm still in the process of setting it up. I might get one of the 512 MiB ones, and perhaps turn this into a private webserver/cheap network attached storage/HTPC (excellent at streaming HDMI) or something. Maybe even a car computer! It's cool.

Anyway, link: http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Okay, so I figured out how to change the faction colors, and how to change the symbol in the faction-choosing screen for the grand campaign. The next step, I suppose, is  figuring out how to change banner textures and the textures on the colors men wear. Woo. :p

Well, actually, I suppose the next step is figuring out how to change the name of the faction. Medieval France is fine and dandy, but they're not the Ash Sea Islands, even if Paris is now Ash'rily.

Edit: I touched up the ASI logo to fit in the current shield style, less the stylized lighting. It looks much better even so.

Edit 2: Figured out how to add names and change starting character names as well as add starting characters. Need to figure out what made it crash, so reverted for now.

Edit 3: I now have a king Malice! I could do the same for Norel, really, but I'm now more interested in...

1. Creating a new map. Tutorial on it is pretty good... think it'll take awhile though.
2. Creating the factions as new factions.
3. Banners!

Not in  any real order.

Well, I'd have a lot of things to do. But I figure if I can't figure out the map part, I'd make ASI France since I always play as France. :p

From what I understand I could make others... But I'd choose a few. Richard the Courageous, of course. Malice, of course. Norel could take the role of the cardinal.

Richard would have an ancillary "Captain Sifeer" and have the trait "High Serpaent Guard" which gives +3  to Morale and +1 to the melee strength and defense of units under his command. :p

So, I was looking into how to mod M2:TW. It'd be fun, I figure... That and/or Warband  would  be fun. I have awhile to go, but I figured out a few basic things.

http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197999134005/screenshot/542894721440825383

http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197999134005/screenshot/542894721440902025

So I can change settlement names and change faction emblems. There's tutorials I've found that tell me how to:

-Change the map
-Fully add new factions
-change factions
-remove old factions
-add new units
-create dismounted version of units
-change current unit information
-change banners, tabards, etc

More difficult will be to modify textures and such unless I can find someone with Photoshop. I'd like to full around more, albeit slowly... And the next step is choosing a few different factions to play around with on the base map, from Atamara in the past and present... A mesh of times if you will. I couldn't imagine a game like this without the majesty of ASI, Falasan and Abington fighting in massive battles.

I'd also like to make the shields look more like the medieval II style.

Roleplaying / Story: Courage Unending, the Fall of Richard
« on: April 26, 2011, 08:46:22 PM »
((OOC: This will come in several parts. Not /exactly/ a roleplay, but a pertinent story and it'll provide me with some needed closure to my favorite character, even if he is essentially reborn into a new one. I'll write more later. All input is appreciated and if you wish to work with me at all, I'd be more than happy. I'm a little cloudy on the history towards the end of ASI, as that's when I started tapering away originally... But here it is, the events of the battle which led to the disappearance, but not the death of, Richard the Courageous. ))

Part 1:

A mass of men surrounded the walls, the Ashlantean army on the defensive. Richard Silver, Count Yacon, known to many as Richard 'the Courageous' looked unusually troubled, and yet he walked along the walls of the fortification, rallying the spirits of his men and those of his friends. He himself commanded almost a hundred of the finest swordsmen known across Atamara. They had to be, as one of the primary forces of the High Serpaent Guard. He earned his position there, amongst the elite, and accepted only the finest men to fight alongside him. His honor demanded he be amongst the best.
Richard heaved a heavy sigh, away from the men so they could not hear him. The proud warrior turned to walk along the defensive line to look for his closest friends; it wasn't hard to find them. Keiichi, Sh'ki, two of the finest warriors he had ever met. But there were plenty more... Doc's Revenge joined them, this day, as did Malice and many others. All were a bit grim, not the usual jovial spirits that the band could gain on any day while together. They shared ale, as freely as they shared their thoughts before departing to make their final preparations for battle.

Keiichi, Sh'ki and Richard remained together for just awhile longer, just as they always did. The odds were rarely this bad against them, and yet they would never consider giving up without as much of a fight their bodies could muster.  And, Richard, admittedly, always had a bit of a soft spot for Keiichi -- the one area where he never possessed enough courage, and so she never really knew. So, then, they departed to rally their men one final time before the battle started. The enemy was approaching.

Richard returned quickly to his men, took a stance in front of them at the edge of the wall. "Men,  I am not one to wish others to be sent into needless peril, nor is our King nor are our marshals. We are here, of course, because we need to be. That lot... that little lot," He turned to gesture towards the massive force behind him, "Threatens us. They threaten our way of life, they threaten to TRY to diminish the value of good Ashlantean blood. Magnus be praised, Ashlantean blood will always be true. If it so happens that we do lose our land and our rights, Corvus protect us, our spirit will not die. They know this, and yet they still make their foolish attempts to bring us down. If they happen to succeed in the end, unlikely as it is, then the time will come where Magnus requires their judgment, and good Ashlantean blooded men and women will become once more the claws of Brusus."

He shakes his head. "Outnumbered as we are, they will likely turn to trickery to try to win the battle, while we rely on good courage, good men and good skill. It will likely be an attempt to demoralize us,  to make us think that Vulpes turned against us. I simply laugh at this gesture. Vulpes will protect us, their trickery will not succeed to the extent they wish. Look out there now, see them approach, like goats to the slaughter. We will instill in them the fear of Great Ashlantean arms, just as Lykos instilled fear in man and became mankind's enemy. They will weep for their mothers when they hear the sound of the wolves at night. I fear no wolf."

He puts his hand on the hilt of his sword. "There are times where I wonder, if an enemy is so vile that Lykos himself would rather side with us then aid them in the destruction of the servants of Magnus. Perhaps we will find out. We are here to do battle. We are here to uphold our oaths. I will not sit back and stand idle, that is not what I do. I am known for my courage, my skill, my ale and my ferocity. I will be there, fighting in the front lines, with good men and women at my sides and at my back, with only the enemy before me. Show them honor, make them flee, instill fear into their hearts, make them run. Show me your courage!  Be better than I! When this is all done, we may all go back to our families, but we must do so only if we stand steady. Now,  men... To arms!" With that, he draws his shortsword which rests above the longer one beneath it. It glimmers brightly in the sunlight, but even brighter yet was the fire in Richard's eyes. His men cheered; his allies cheered. A thunderous sound echoed from across the fortifications.

Richard knew his part, though. They moved to the gates and awaited the signal. They would be an advance part, with much of the rest of the High Serpant Guard, and other volunteers. The enemy would be soft and demoralized before they made it to the walls, if the Guard had anything to say about it.

Feature Requests / Re: New Unit stat: Courage
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:25:24 PM »
I think there is such a thing as individual valor, but it's an unaccountable thing. When a man is exhausted and keeps on fighting successfully, or manages to survive when outnumbered and actually inflicts casualties to the opposing force who is supposed to be superior, valor does play a role. But it's something you can't really account for. At best it'd be a random, temporary boost to unit Morale, Cohesion and CS for a round.

What I think would be neat, though, is a rallying cry from particularly effective captains or nobles. For nobles it'd be wise to restrict it to heroes and cavaliers.

Remember that it is largely training that keeps a man steady in the face of danger. A professional soldier might stand before the charging enemy, while the peasant pees himself and turns to run. But again, there can be moments of individual valor... Maybe they are encouraged enough to counter charge, where they're likely squashed by superior forces anyhow.

I use Java primarily, myself. It's a nice language, but it has some problems still and I personally think it's about due for a big update which could hopefully make it a bit more efficient.

I want to learn C sharp next, but I've also been looking in to UnityScript.

General Talk / Re: What Browser Do You Use?
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:07:53 PM »
When I was younger, I was relegated to AOL browser as I'm sure many others might have. :p

Of course, later went to IE as I was figuring things out. I tried Firefox, didn't like, honestly, especially when the tabs were much clunkier. So, I used Opera, but even that fell behind eventually and I ultimately went back to IE because the tabs felt better and actually split each tab to a seperate sub-process, before FireFox, as I recall. I didn't like FireFox for some time after a point... Then Chrome came out, and I've used that ever since.

The UI is a little Spartan, but that's alright. It runs well, loads websites efficiently, caches okay... But the efficient loading is what does it, lets me browse through a site a little faster.

Other Games / Re: Mount and Blade (Warband)
« on: April 26, 2011, 03:58:10 PM »
I loved the first Mount & Blade to death, but haven't had a chance to play Warband, yet.

Warband is much better. Not only does it look prettier, but the combat animations are more realistic and fluid, the equipment is better befitting of the cultures the different factions represent... You can also start your own Kingdom, but it takes a bit to make the other factions even think that you are /slightly/ worthy of having any right to rule. Typically if you do it too soon, they all declare war on you.

The Sarranid Sultanate is neat, but I think the Swadians are still my favorite. I don't like the Vaegirs as much as I used to. It seems a tidbit more balanced with the factions, too, except that the Kherjits are still kinda annoying.

Though I haven't been back to the game for long, I pondered a Total War or Mount and Blade mod relating to some of my favorite BattleMaster moments for awhile now... I just thought it'd have an epic feel to it... Of course my favorite realms and people were steeped in roleplay, so creating strengths and weaknesses for each of them wouldn't be all that difficult. Plus undead and monster hordes to tear you to pieces. :p

There's one mod for it... I don't remember it precisely, but I wanted to try it out. It basically brings an RPG element to the online play of M&B Warband and I heard it's really good. There's also a realism mod somewhere that turns the factions into a variety of real ones, like Medieval England, France etc. that I wanted to try out.

The one thing I dislike WB from the original is I think they made lances worse. The recharge in WB for couched lance attack is much slower. Maybe this isn't bad at high weapon skill, but I don't use lance anymore to find out.

It was far too OP in the original, that's for sure. I mean, a lance itself is extremely dangerous, but it would be a little unwieldy even in the hands of the finest knight, I'd assume. It needed the nerf for online, but it's a little too nerfed offline. At the very least make it forcibly dismount enemy cavalry if you hit them...

I noticed that I can still do 300+ damage couched to horses; but half the time I don't break 30-40 on a soldier. The long cooldown time is great, honestly. What I don't like is that charging with a spear on a horse is worthless now. I used to play as a mounted sergeant: Spear, Shield, Sword, and sometimes a mace or club, with light armor, or at the heaviest a mail with surcoat.

Other Games / Re: Shogun 2 Total War
« on: April 26, 2011, 09:36:39 AM »
Medieval II is my favorite; Rome is good too. Empire was okay... Shogun 2 is great, too, but Medieval 2 takes the cake. My only problems with it ends up being the near unmanageable expenses I will build late game on anything beyond normal difficulty (and possibly then), and that I had four cities of mine besieged by turn 7, at once, on Very Hard difficulty. Battles are fun, still a little buggy there... Oooh,  I won a 300 on 2000 siege and lost 20 men.

Which I suppose isn't bad as throwing your General's Body guard in front of a breach or open gate in Rome, where he gets 900 kills himself. Then again, I took a castle with just a General's Bodyguard in M2 as well. They all have bits and pieces I like... I miss knocking soldiers off walls like you could in Rome, and routing soldiers just committing suicide by running off walls.

I use a lot of Ashigaru in Shogun 2, with samurai to soften up their lines when they're tangled with my ashigaru lines. Heavy use of archers and trying to be on the defensive in pitched battles is a good way to win as you can better use the terrain to your advantage.

Note: Hit insert while selecting a unit. You get a first person perspective of one of the soldiers... Slowmotion arrow travel if they're a bowman, it's fun to see it kill an enemy general.
