Feature Requests / Re: Ease buying regions a little

Figure out your player retention problem yet? I was really shocked when I came back to Atamara.

Our player retention problem is because of a number of factors, including needing to be more understandable and accessible to newbies, needing to overhaul the mentorship system, and needing to overhaul the estate system.

It has nothing to do with the fact that you can't go out into the middle of nowhere and set up a new realm by spending huge amounts of family gold.

You mean like, wander off to a city and buy it?

That's not being a leader.  That's just deciding to go play your own game.

Quote
maybe I don't WANT to be a leader. Maybe I just want to EXIST, and interact with characters around me, and sometimes help them, and sometimes ask them for help, and sometimes just write and share my own story.

Sometimes I'll be on a team, and sometimes I won't. Not so hard a concept, is it?

If you want to write and share your own story, you're welcome to do that.  That's what the RP board is for.

If you want to play BattleMaster with the rest of us, then accept that you will need help to found a new realm.

I can 99.999% guarantee you that there will never, ever be any features added or tweaks made that make it easier for you to go off and found a realm all by yourself.  Or in any other way isolate yourself and play your own separate game.

BattleMaster is meant to be played as a team.  Don't want to play on a team? That's OK, we can't stop you, and you can probably come up with some fun stories, but don't expect to get any support doing it.

Too often "Battlemaster is supposed to be a team game" really means "Battlemaster has a few leaders and you are expected to follow them"

Don't be stupid.

Don't like the leaders you have to choose from?

Become a leader yourself.

Yeah, that's definitely from clicking "login"...

Looking through what's going on a little more carefully:

It looks like the output you pasted, Tony, could only have come from clicking "Login", not "Register".  That is, the person clicking it would already have to have a BM account linked to their Core account, and be trying to get into it.

Naturally, it's still an error that will need to be fixed, but it's a distinctly different kind of error...

My friend is trying to register for battlemaster but he is keep getting 'SSO did not work as expected. Oops.' message. I never seen this happening :(

Foundation: Sorry, couldn't help but correct the spelling.  Hope you don't mind.

Tony,
Can you please verify something for me?  Please make sure that once your friend is logged into the Core, he clicks on "Register" next to BattleMaster, and not on "Link to Core".

This is, of course, assuming that your friend is trying to create a new BM account, and not simply link an existing one to the Core.

Someone (De-Legro, maybe? I forget) mentioned this extension a while back to fix our reputation troubles:

Looks pretty good to me.

One thing I can do—and intend to test soon—is put an indicator by the Messages link in the sidebar of the number of new messages you have.

The only question is whether to make it auto-check, or just update every time you go to a new page. Auto-checking might be too much of a load on the server, so it would need to be tested carefully.

No, and I truly don't understand how you could read that from my example. Could you explain it to me please?

If you're worried about people going into negative bond numbers, there should be a steep honour drop accompanying that.

If they have no bonds, what are they going to pay?

Also, perhaps the chat could be real-time? This would help immensely, especially since most new players would not know about the irc channels (or might even be playing via phone, like me, and so not be able to use irc). That way they can ask for help on cerrtain issues when they come up and get immediate answers. Just so we are clear, there would either be only one or no realms on newb island. That way it doesn't just become a griefing ground with realms of experienced players trouncing newbs.

Sorry, that's not practical in multiple ways.

The most obvious is this:

Say you join the game, and you find that oh! it's got real-time chat!  So you send a message, and wait patiently for a reply to come in.

But nobody is currently online, so you wait for 20 minutes and get nothing.  Disgusted—after all, it's supposed to be real-time chat! WTF, man?—you leave the game and never come back.

Far more useful would be a notice on the joining page that warns players that the game is not a fast-paced one like WoW where you can expect 30,000 other people to be online at the same time as you, and you will have to wait for responses to your questions.

And this is different from how people usually play how? The only bonds I ever have are the ones from taxes while on campaign. Also, if someone hoards golds instead of bonds, they get taxed for gold. If this change were implemented, while you may be able to hoard gold for all eternity if you were to get outside the reach of the taxman for gold (which, from what I have seen, has only been suggested for prison), you could only receive bonds as you would more than likely be outside your duchy and thus receiving bonds anyways. Which would be taxed.

I'm not sure what you're saying happens here.  Right now, bonds and gold both get taxed equally.  If you have 200 gold, and the tax rate is 20% over 100, you'll get taxed 20 gold.  If you have 200 bonds, with the same tax rate, you'll get taxed 20 bonds.

As things stand, if you have over 200 gold + bonds under that tax rate, you will get taxed something.  You can't just choose to pay no taxes this week by dumping it all into gold.

Under your proposal, anyone who doesn't feel like paying taxes will be able to dump all their money into gold just before tax day and pay no taxes that week.

So, again: no.

Development / Re: Religion is missing something?
« on: May 27, 2011, 05:49:43 PM »
Quick question: does the "The peasants are unhappy that the local Lord does not follow the majority religion" appear if the majority religion is paganism? I think it would make sense that it does, even when the Lord is also pagan: after all, if it's not organized, it's probably not the same brand of paganism.

When the majority of peasants in a region are pagans, there is no majority belief

"Paganism" in BM is not a single religion: it simply means the hodgepodge of local superstitions and beliefs that exist outside of organized religions.

What if no one wants to be a diplomat in a particular realm?

What if no one wants to be a trader in a particular realm?

What if no one wants to be a courtier in a particular realm?
