He decided it was worth the risk to check on the third man, disguising the casting by incorporating the gesture into a caress on his companions cheek, sending out a questing thought toward that third man with the need to know if the man were indeed a mage Spontaneous Magic (Perceive/Mind - 2/2/1).
The magic was altered before it reached the third man. Instead of only targeting only one person, the magic worked on all three. But the magic became too weak for any of them to be even noticed what just happened.

(ooc: I was going to intensify it actually but I got stuck with 3/1/1. I got confused whether it only needs to target brains to work or actual people.)
