Harsh is a very subjective term, and intolerable varies quite a lot per person.
But Mendicant would never demand anything the other person cannot reasonably do, stand, or deserves to have demanded of them.
The problem is Mendicant will find totally reasonable to demand you to cut your right hand (or both, if he had a bad day). Obviously, you can stand it. And if you have fight against the mighty Aurvandil, there is nothing undeserved for you!
