- Galiard has a heart attack but recovers by drinking Oradrikkon's port in Haul after displacing the polysllabic Zonasan lord and becoming Cathay's newest (and now, only) Duke
- The Free Kingdom of Bathay sputters into existence for twenty-four hours and either loses or wins a war against Cathay, depending on your point of view
- An aspiring young Cathayan infiltrator discovers the hard way that Cathayan guardsmen can see in the dark and fails to stab Seperoth, who is ironically the only noble of Cathay remaining other than the King, one councilor, Dodd, and one knight so new that nobody knew his name yet in order to banish him
