REJECTED: Vote to Expel from Federation
« Topic Start: December 15, 2012, 07:24:04 AM »
Title: Vote to Expell from Federation

Summary: A Federation can expel a realm if enough members vote to do so.

Description: Right now Federated realms can only withdraw individually from a federation. This allows individual realms to ignore whatever terms are set for their Federation and suffer no consequences. In order to retaliate the other realms would have to break from the federation, wait five days for the chance to make peace with each other, spend another two days to get back up to a Federation and then deal with the realm which has been abusing their federation.

Instead there could be a diplomacy option for a Federated realm "Vote to Expel from Federation" this would only be an option for federations of three or more realms. If enough realms vote (it could be either by majority or consensus of the other realms) the offending realm is kicked out of the Federation.

The Federation could default to a given diplomatic stance with the expelled realm. Neutral would be the most practical.

Benefits: Federations have the power to enforce the terms of membership. For example if one of their terms is mutual defense they can expel a realm for refusing to support them in war.

Possible Exploits: a ruler might repeatedly call such a vote despite being rejected by the other realms, resulting in spam. This could be remedied with a limit of how often you can vote. Eventually such an action would frustrate the rest of the Federation most likely resulting in the spamming ruler having his own realm expelled.

Just sign an alliance if you don't want to risk a federation.

Rejected.

Federations are intentionally very hard and painful to dissolve. In fact, that is what makes a federation different from an alliance. It is very intentional that a multi-nation federation can not simply kick out one member. In fact, the lack of this option is what makes a federation different from an alliance.

If you don't want that, don't sign a federation, simple as that.

What if kicking out a federation partner resulted in everyone having the "hatred" status with them?

'cause defaulting to neutral would be horrible and defeat the purpose of federations, defaulting to hatred might help prevent friendly federation dissolving.

It would be the opposite of what a federation is supposed to be. And too easily gamed. No. There are reasons for the system being the way it is. Problems that lead to this request are because people made a federation they shouldn't have made in the first place.

I partially disagree, but I do concede that it would make the dissolving of federations a lot easier. The fear of automatically declaring war on a bunch of people is much greater than the fear of a bunch of people only needing to automatically declare war one 1 realm.

It would not make federations the same as alliances. A member still would be unable to withdraw without inviting war. How does it make any sense that one realm abusing its federation can only be dealt with by the entire federation declaring war on one another?

They can always send troops as murderous. Or all break the federation, and re-ally each other but declare war on that last guy.

It's ugly and not as quick, but it can be done via other means.

The behaviour—and the inconvenience—is fully intentional, and Tom has unequivocally rejected this request.

Please accept this decision and put your energies into finding creative IC solutions to problems of this nature, because you are not going to get any OOC solutions here.
