The way to make a guild profitable for the founder/elders/certain people is to set up a large monthly fee (say, 10 gold per month, or more) for those on the bottom of the pyramid, and then have a large monthly grant for those on top. Then you need a compelling reason for people to join the guild (such as only handing out lordships and other positions to those in the guild). Having a fee to move up the pyramid helps too--possibly with very large sums to move up the rungs, with corresponding decreases in the monthly fee as they move up the rungs.

With lots of superfluous, meaningless positions (but with fancy titles) to "move up" to.

That doesn't make anyone rich, it just gives them great positive balances. However, as the ones lower down never actually pay their dues, none of the temples have the required treasuries to hand out to those up top.

And if you want people to buy lots of ranks... good luck. Still, to be successful, you'll need a lot of guild houses, or large guildhouses, so that the max full member count isn't too low. And doing so costs a lot of gold... much more than the rank fees will bring back. All of these constructions, as well, will take your gold, but not modify your balance, always leaving you in the net negatives.

It's just like in any organization... you don't have to be the best, you just need to be first in a position to promote your peers.

Your mistaking making guilds profitable overall and making it profitable for a one or two people. SA for instance (religions are guilds) could definitely be profitable for leaders because of a lot of donations by a lot of people. Is the guild a gold sink? Yes, but it can still be profitable for a some people.

I'm not an elder to confirm anything on SA's financial situation, but I really doubt that SA can make anyone rich. If you want to be rich, try to get elected as lord of a city in a realm with a large food surplus. Fiddling around with guilds is not the way to go.

Sure, it's possible to be a total leech and get more gold out of guilds than you put in, but that will never make you rich.

From what I remember of the finances for SA I don't think anyone is getting very rich.   It costs a lot of gold to keep a church that size going.

SA doesn't make anyone rich -- at least not directly through its treasuries. Far more people give up their own gold to SA than take anything from it.

However, through the stability granted via its near hegemony on religious matters throughout most of Dwilight, indirectly... who can say?

Arundel for emperor! Because we need strong players on the throne, not strong characters! And the powergamers will follow them regardless of what anyone says about legal claims...

How many members does SA actually have? And is that including all the SA in Asylon/Farronite & Niselur.

IIRC 143 members in all of Dwilight, though like only 80 something are full members.

130 members, 68 full members.

And 1.46 million common followers.

Finally climbed back up after we lost about 1/2 of our followers due to computational errors.

It is actually well above the previous high. Probably still growing, took, since there is no competition at all.
