The men had been firing from afar as the Darkan cavalry raced forward, into the ranks of the enraged peasants who had taken up arms. Raziel shook his head sadly as most of them were ridden down and killed. The Cavalry now reformed and picked up pace from a walk to a canter as his men rained death upon the enemy with their great crossbows. The men fired, dropped the end of the crossbow and worked the winches like men possessed until the enemy horse, now a tenth of their original number, broke into a run, attempting to drive the charge home.

"Hold!" Raziel barked, his harsh voice giving then men confidence. He watched the cavalry close, and when they were too close to break off, he bellowed "Now!" and the men in the first rank of the square knelt and picked up winged spears, planting the butts down into the hard ground. The men in the second rank loosed a volley at a murderously close range, reveling in the whet 'thunk' sound the bolts made as the struck home. One horse went down, crashing through the first rank, killing several men. Another horse went down, dragging its rider with it, trapping him underneath its dead weight. He screamed in agony until one of Raziel's men silenced him with a spear, the blade tearing the Darkan's throat open. The man began to rifle through the fallen horseman's saddlebags. The final rider swerved, and looked like they were safe, when suddenly the rider was unceremoniously ripped from her saddle, screaming, a mancatcher holding her neck. She landed on the ground and Raziel rushed forward and kicked her in the head, her helmet having been lost in her less than graceful dismount. Her eyes rolled back into her head and she saw no more. Raziel spit on her.

"Darkan bitch." he swore at the unconscious noble woman at his feet. He looked at the family crest on her tabbard, now filthy with dirt, and grinned. He turned to his men.

"You bloody rogues have done it this time. Assaulting the Royal Treasurer of Darka is a capital crime." He said with a grin, and the men cheered before returning to plundering the corpses of the Darkan cavalry.

Raziel and his men lay on the ridge, patiently waiting for the tax collector to come by. The local he had given silver said that he came by at about the same time everyday, and was known to carry a large amount of coin. Sure enough, a richly dressed man and a single guard wielding a cudgel came riding down the road shortly after dark. The first bolt took the guard in the throat, the second took the tax collector's horse in the eye. The horse was dead before it hit the ground. His men drew their blades, and charged down the slopes, Raziel at the front, his massive blade, Faust, in hands. He hit the tax collector with the flat of the blade, knocking him to the ground. The man spat a tooth out was dragged to his feet by a pair of Raziel's men.

"I am under the protection of Lord Wlasbhemy, and this is the King's Road you are accosting me upon. Release me now, and your deaths will be painless!" squealed the fat man. Raziel smacked him across the face with a gauntlet clad hand.

"Shut yer fat mouth. You're speaking to Sir Raziel IV, Grand Vizier of Lyonesse and Count of Loratil." Growled one of his men. Raziel glared at the man, and grabbed him by the throat.

"Keys. Now." he growled, and the fat man blubbered and choked. He fished a key ring out of his pocket and Raziel snatched it.

"Keys m'lord? What do we need bloody keys for?" asked his captain as the fat man was released, falling to his knees, blubbering unintelligibly.

"Do you think they just keep their tax gold laying about in the open? Its locked in a chest in a strongroom at the Lord's estate, just down the road from here. Since they lack any appreciable amount of guards in the county, I figured we'd stroll in and liberate them of the burden." Raziel said with a grin. "Kill the fat man." he added, and one of his men sawed through the fat man's neck with a dagger, leaving him choking and bleeding in the road. He was dead shortly afterwards.

The men took off, and shortly afterwards Raziel was 119 gold richer, and the Lord's estate now found itself sporting Lyonessen banners. Raziel figured they would be taken down after he left, and he dared not stay for too long. He and his men needed to keep moving if they were to remain alive. It was true, they had taken down several larger units already, even facing down two nobly led units at once, but if they stayed in any one place too long, it wouldn't be hard for a large enough group to catch them.
