Kurlock has decided to use the 'neutral' strategy while Cody has chosen the 'aggressive' strategy, giving Cody the advantage.
The duel goes as planned, then badly for Kurlock. He suffers several slight wounds, then a final, fatal blow. The healers hurry, but they are too late.

I'm pretty sure that as a theocracy we'd have to proclaim Kurlock as supreme generalissimo for life now even if he wasn't already the ruler.
