Since then I have noticed all the lands I can see are operating at a deficiency of food production.  Has anyone noticed this also?

Aye, I saw the same in Fissoa.

I have a feeling food will be the least of our worries...

Portal stones have historically had little effect on Dwilight.  Unless of course you count making the Zuma angry as an effect.

The last portal stones used wiped out large chunks of monsters and undead when the West was closing down.
