So my character, let's just call him Bob, wants to loot the lands of a realm that is peaceful with his. Brimming with excitement, he tells his meatsa-*ahem*soldiers to be murderous. However, this fails to initiate combat even when only he and that realm's troops are in the region. Could someone please tell me if this is correct behaviour?

Peaceful is the strongest form of diplomatic relation I believe. It overrides even murderous if I remember correctly.

I am not a combat specialist, at all. One could even say I suck at it, which I'd agree to.

But I was under the impression you would attack units who are at peace with you when using murderous settings.

I am interested to know why that didn't work as well.

This is incorrect. Murderous overrides all diplomatic settings.

However, it still has limitations. You cannot attack if you have already been declared a defender, and sometimes the process of declaring defenders can be a bit zealous.

Furthermore, murderous or not, combat or not, has no effect on whether you can loot another realm. That is entirely determined by diplomatic status.

I can loot the realm in question, but only if I can clear the troops of that region. I can't do that if I can't engage them. So it isn't a matter of diplomatic status.

This sounds like a top secret mission  ;D

You were there before the realm's units, right? That makes you the defender, and as others pointed out, "you cannot attack if you have already been declared a defender" move to another region if you want to engage them/continue looting. ;)

I moved there while my units were set to murderous from my own territory. Sorry, but no, your scenario is not what happened. So please don't give me a patronising explanation. I've been around here for a long time, I know what causes defender status, thank you.

For the choicest meatsacks to send to our torture farms, of course.
