Having talked to Gildre separately, I know that this was not what he meant by this.
The line you quote is expressing a frustration with the attitude, "Well,
we had a terrible thing happen to us, so if the same (or a similar) terrible thing happens to you, that's just fine! Maybe you even deserve it!"
That kind of attitude perpetuates cycles of abuse. The attitude we want to cultivate is, "We had a terrible thing happen to us.
How do we make sure it never happens to anyone else?"
