Concept: When a character is being executed, the judge can grant them the right to say any last words. They then are allowed to put in a short message of their character's last words. This message then appears in the execution announcement.
I like this idea. All the hard work go into the long time played character and the character deserve a last word.

Seems like most of the worry is that someone will take the opportunity to say something nasty or stupid. I think we need to have more faith in each other rather than taking the side of caution at the expense of fun.
Yeah, we should have more faith and belief in each other. We are nice folk, ain't we? :P

Some people died immediately in battle, but I believe they were mostly the common soldiers.  When nobles were fataly injured I believe they were carted off to relative safety and medics.  Dying shortly there after but probably had some time to talk.
I am not saying give people two days to finish up busness, but a turn to make a short statement seems harmless.  Limit it to 140 characters if you like.
As for concern of non-SMA comments, I would say allow posthumous honour removal for serious violations.
A limit of characters is a right way to go. Better than poking our own eyes, seeing that the almost dead character able to talk for such a long long time 8)

To be perfectly honest, a few stupid last statements really wont hurt anyone.  There was clearly not enough blood going to the man's brain, he kept talking about a bat-man and butter.
As for the nasty ones...don't know.  I suppose that is where the honour/prestige fine could come in.  I have not heard that many nasty statements from players in the game right now, I doubt that would increase much with final words.
The final words would be sent to the player's realm for a death in battle, and would also be sent to the captor's realm when executed?

Should be sent to everyone in the region where he died.

The idea is fine, but there is no way a dead character (or deadly wounded) can last half day(a turn) to say something.

What must be done is to ability a predefined text which will be use as last message, or in the case you have a date with the executioner.

It can be a character detail or account option(for whole family), and the chances to appear would be:

Sons of Mommy  (6) take 18,433 hits in close combat. which cause 1 casualties, wiping the unit out.
Guy who Die (Knight of There, Here) has been Killed by Baby Killer (19).
The last words from Guy Who Die were, "mommy i Love you"

Public Execution: Messengers bring news of a public execution in Here earlier today. Baby Killer, a troop leader of Almost There, had been banned from Here, when he was later imprisoned the judge of Here decided to make him pay for his crimes.
The last words from Baby Killer were, "It was an accident!"
[/i]

Something like that would be......nice?

I like this idea quite a bit.

Yeah, generally speaking. I mean if somebody's gonna say something rude or snarky or just plain idiotic they're gonna do that, whether or not they have to work around game mechanics (On the forum, making a new character/account to flame the killer). Removing the IG option will not remove the OOG !@#$%^&. If it's really something bad, ding the family for it. Loss of fame or fortune would be pretty good incentive to avoid being a jerk.

I think I'd prefer the immediacy option over pre-set final words.
Having an entry field like that might lead to more OOC quirkiness and heroic sacrifices where the character says something about the war two years ago against Evilstani because his player forgot to update his death text when they started fighting Keplerstan last season.

I'd envision something like this:

  • When a character dies and is allowed final words, a screen/message/option shows up explaining that you've got the option to write your final utterances (limited to a relatively small amount of characters).
    • This screen/option/message is displayed for the entire turn after death and disappears for all time at turn change.
  • Judges have the option to allow last words when they choose to execute someone.
    • The character's last words will be sent out to the capital/vicinity of capital/realm.
  • Characters who die in battle have a weighted random chance (possibly modified by total hits suffered after reduction) of receiving last words privileges.
    • This message is sent to all in region of death.
  • Assassinated characters also have a random chance as well based on different factors.
    • Swiftly executed assassinations have a very/extremely low chance of resulting in last words.
      • Possibly have those who are granted this a smaller character limit (ie. "Aaaauuuggghhhh...").
    • Assassinations with more complications such as prolonged fighting with the target might have a fair/good chance at dying words.

That way, you have an opt-in by judges and a system for a "low" probability in other cases. There'll likely be fewer dying words overall (compared to a prearranged saying) due to players missing entire turns, forgetting they have the option after initial appearance, etc.

Obviously, commoners aren't important enough to have anyone listen to their death throes.

I agree with Indirik here, your last words are exactly that, your last words...before you died. They should come for the last message sent before the death, that should make for some nice famous last words.

Its not like death is very common, anyone expecting to die should treat each turn as their last and each message they send as their last. For prisoners expecting to be executed, they can send out a last letter. For heroes they can send out letters before a large battle. Words uttered with a dying breath arent usually loud enough to be heard by many.

The issue there is nobody knows when they'll die. You move your troops then wait for turn change. After turn change you might be dead with no chance for any last words.

To expect a hero to send out last words before every single battle (as he can die in any battle, big or small) is ridiculous. A hero might fight a dozen large battles before he dies, or he might never die at all. An infiltrator might escape before he can be executed.

If people are against this idea, they really need to come up with a better reason than "dead is dead".

Sounds pretty much like real life. No one knows when they are going to die. Battles are loud, no one can hear your last words. Dying people aren't exactly the loudest people. There are already lots of places to RP your characters death, being dead never stopped people from RPing before.

But thats not what this is about. In executions, theres nothing stopping the Judge from offering to allow the noble to say some last words before pressing the button to chop him. Why does this need a new feature.

I have to agree that it can be done without a specific feature. Also, in an execution, nothing forces the Judge to relay these last words to the public at large, or to allow them at all.
After all it's a roleplaying game.

Also a terrible reason. If you want "real life", we'd better add in mortality, plague and messages that take days or weeks to arrive.

Charles

I would also like to bring up the point again, that in battle, not all deaths were instantaneous.  Some people clearly were killed in the battle and were dead right away.  Not all injuries were decapitations, spears through the heart or a mace crushing your skull.  The person may only have hours to live, but as a noble, they would have those hours.  Regular soldiers obviously would have been put out of their misery.

Zakilevo

Maybe there should be 50 50 chance of your last words being sent out?

As for executions, I think judges can ask for last words and deliver that to whatever realm his prisoner came from.

Charles

For executions it seems even easier, just delay the actual execution by a turn.  Make escape and ransom at that point impossible and allow the prisoner to send one last message to their realm/ruler.  The execution occurs immediately after the message is sent or at the turn change, which ever is first.

Cant be, since BM is a lightweight game many player set destination with 1 day anticipation, then they leave and in some cases they came back after couple of days or a weekend.

I lost my only hero because my PC broke for 4 days and i was guarding a region.

Weird, Huge battles are big  where many people fight against each other, also  you can know in the other side of the continent that X noble was wounded/captured by X unit.

And of course is not like every noble if fighting alone in the middle of 1,000 enemy soldier, they have to have companions fighting besides them, other noble, other noble's unit, and they see!

Is the same way you get captured and 500+ men from your realm who won the battle was there with you, and let the losers take you hostage, some one nearby saw them taking you!

Is not like the noble was struck by an arrow, stabbed by sword or pierced by a lance, and then yell "LONG LIVE TUCHANON XVII!"

NO!

The noble will fall, maybe a troop, or noble who is close (if is not busy fighting) get close and heard the deadly wounded whisper "T..Tell.. My....moth..er to feed...the...cat......urrggg....."

Or something like that...

Peace!
