So with the new system, how can a realm in the north trade with a realm on the opposite side of the continent? Can traders cover such a long distance?

Indirik

Traders with good skill can connect a buyer and seller that are over 1,200 miles apart. (Over 600 miles in each direction from his current location.) Also, a lord or steward can always trade against his home region warehouse, regardless of how far away he is.
If at first you don't succeed, don't take up skydiving.

Yep. Just walk across the continent to the region you want to trade with, or a marketplace fairly close to it.

When trading in the new system, how long time is it supposed to take before the food arrives?

3,5 days ago I bought 400 food from a neighbouring region, but my region is still starving and I am still loosing soldiers due to lack of food. This is what I got tday:

There is starvation in Unterstrom Vorstadt, and your men can't find enough to eat. 1 men fall ill from lack of food.
# The food stores are depleted and the people start to go hungry.
# Shipments of grain have begun arriving in the region, but the granaries need time to distribute them to the peasants.
Everything in my own immediate experience supports my deep belief that I am the absolute center of the universe, the realest, most vivid and important person in existence.

You can check if the food has arrived in your granary.
It most probably has. For the moment all transactions are supposed to be instantaneous ( Beam me up Scotty!!!  ;D )

Even with the old system, it took some days for the starvation effects to wear off.
I had starvation for a week after I filled a region warehouse with 300 bushels of food, for a devastated region consuming with the troops 15/day.
The region had about 1/12 of it's population.

Correct.
