I am talking PLAYERS, not characters.

And seriously, FORCING people to play somewhere? Have they handed out the crazy pills while I wasn't looking?

Yes, I do take crazy pills every four hours actually... :o

Had to? But what if that new continent ends up like [insert continent you dislike the most here]? Does that mean I couldn't even pause? I'd probably just camp in the capital then.

Well I thought if there was a big community and lots of adversity and ambition nobody would be bored. Why would you camp in the capital, though? Because things went stagnant or because there is nowhere to go (for you as a player)? That is what we have to determine as maybe something to improve upon in the other continents.
Ironsides Family, mainly East Continent and Dwilight. I dip my toe into Atamara here and there

Indirik

Different people like different islands. Some people who love Dwilight, hate Atamara, and vice-versa. Some would quite if Atamara disappeared, some would cheer. Some love EC, and others point to it as an example of everything wrong with the game.

The fact is, they all have a different play experience. Not everyone likes the same play experience.

Absolutely no new island will open up while all the existing ones are having issues of low player population.

500? That would bring us back to old levels. Get me 1000 new players and I'll make a new continent.

Maybe Might & Fealty will bring is a big flux of new BM players with it?

You know, for those people who don't want/can't put in the time for the 6 turns a day of M&F or those who don't want to pay for it? Direct them to BM.

There are places where I did not have fun as a player. Some where because the flavour of the realm and/or continent itself was not for me, some simply because I had fun at some point with a character but no longer do. This being BM, however, you are never forced to play at a specific place. I just paused or emigrated or killed my character and started anew elsewhere, until I found the places I like.

I could give you the criteria that would ensure this hypothetical new continent would be fun for me. However, as Indirik said, this is a sure recipe to create a continent that would be dead boring for many others. The converse is also true.

If I don't like this continent, then I won't play in it. It's just a game, you can't force me. If I don't want to play,  I won't bother logging in this character. And if that's what I'm going to end up doing, then you would have a much better game by letting me pause and make room for those characters that players actually want to play.
After all it's a roleplaying game.

Mmmmm Crazy pills are my favorite!  I have been selling them in the parking lot.

imho, i think only a native mobile client would bring more bm players, but not many.  bm requires thought, planning, and relationship building.  zynga has taught an entire generation to play without thinking.

i think we should close an island or two to increase player density but that will also cause the loss of some players.

I've been thinking that for a long time, but you can't close any island, really, without the loss of a huge amount of history.

I wonder, has the number of player on Beluaterra increased or decreased since a huge chunk of it was shot down? I don't have a feeling that the player density has increased very much there.

History is history.  Do we preserve history so we can fade out?

Can we use history to be the driving force between some sort of inter island cataclysm merging event?

Dishman

I know this sounds a bit odd, but I say we crash one island into another.

Keep the realms (maybe shrink them to a city and a few rurals for balance), and the characters associated. Rework the map to be appropriate for a new continent (but recycle from the original two). Now you keep the history of realms intact, get rid of a continent, and open the door for brand new experiences for players from both continents.

The kind of chaos that would follow would be delicious.
Eoric the Dim (Perdan), Enoch the Bright (Asylon), Emeric the Dark (Obsidian Islands)

Orobos, The Insatiable Snake (Sandalak)

Indirik

That would be worse than just closing an island. Not gonna happen.

Tom

Not gonna happen. Nobody needs to fear their island will be closed unless you, the players, collectively abandon it. I would close down an island that has almost no players left on it, but not one where the game is still very much alive.

We need more players, simple as that.

Tom,

Didn't you say you would rather wait until the game becomes more balanced? Gathering more players seem to come on now and then but I haven't seen much boost in the number of players so far :(
