A separate sect doesn't have to be geographically difference, so I'm not seeing your point. And technically they do, seeing as they see the religious hierarchy starting with god.
That's the only thing they share. Ask a 13th century catholic what he thinks of a Cathar, and ask him if they're the same religion.
