In the misty mornings, Hadron rode the hired coach through the nearly deserted streets of the city of Freke toward the docks. At the docks he would board a ship for the short trip across the straights to Aegir. He would miss the city. Though he had only been here for a week, he enjoyed it. There was a lot of history here. It had been possessed by a few realms over the years resulting in the blend of many cultures. Unlike many other cities in the region, such as Unterstrom, Freke had mostly escaped the ravages of war. Because of this, you didn't just know that this city was old and cultured, you could see it, and feel it.

The coach rattled along over the cobbles. The many hooves of his escorting cavalry troops followed along behind, their tack and harness making a comforting, if somewhat loud, sound that was soothing to his cavalryman's ears. With all that, he didn't even hear the approach of the fast-riding messenger until his troopers called out the challenge. Nor could he understand the ensuing conversation that ended with the courier galloping off through the streets.

There was an immediate rap on the door of the coach. Hadron lifted the shade, saw it was one of this guards, then opened the window. "M'Lord Hadron, a courier has informed me that a deputation of the local officials wish to meet with you before you depart. They have set up a meeting at the customs office near the docks. Will you grant their petition?"

"Of course, captain. We are in no great hurry. I don't see any reason to deny their request. I do think the timing is a bit awkward. We've been here for a week, and they wait until we've practically got one foot on the deck of the ship before they request an audience? Well, like I said, we're not exactly in a hurry here. Go ahead and inform the coachmen of the new destination."

"As you command, m'Lord."

The customs office was the typical government office. It was sturdy and serviceable, but the stonework was very ornate. The engraving over the entrance dated the construction back to the early years following the foundation of Corsanctum. The mark of the Bloodstars was quite prominently displayed, though somewhat worn by time.

The deputation consisted of about a dozen officials. They ranged from constabulary functionaries to palace officials all the way up to prominent, but minor, nobility. Getting right down to business, they outlined the lack of noble leadership of the city, the chronic inattention of the Astrum government, and the way that Astrum had to call in foreign troops to help defend the city from invasion. In short, they were tired of it and wanted a change. And it just so happened that someone with prominent noble lineage was right here, in their city! With some research, the Indirik family claim to city could easily be established. There would, of course, be a small expense associated with the research, but that wasn't an issue.

After discussing the matter for a few hours, Hadron agreed to their proposal. The documents were signed. Ribbons attached. Wax was poured and stamped. It was all quite impressive. They assured him it was quite official and legal.

When it was done, the senior official handed Hadron the official seals of office of Freke. "Congratulations, Duke Hadron, Margrave of Freke. May your lordship be fruitful and peaceful."

And with that, it was done.
