So we just had a major referendum to solve a disagreement in Ikalak. Figured that would solve everything. Except the vote was tied. YAY! The worlds most useless referendum!

Referendums are almost always a bad idea to make decisions. It makes your leaders look weak, and causes more division than unity. I feel it's usually best to offer the chance to discuss and then decide, with an honest evaluation afterwards to see what went good/bad.

Sometimes you want a ruler to be weak. Always having strong leaders doesn't really provide realism or diversity

Of course, but there's plenty of weak rulers out there. I don't think they need help of experienced players pretending to be weak

We tried discussing it. It all ended in a disaster, with a village nearly being burned down from the fires of burnt letters.

Referendum was actually a success. We did learn that the realm is split 50/50 on the issue so it's pretty much up to the king what ruling to pass. He will have enough support either way.
But of course haters gonna hate.
