Title: So I noticed something on IRC today...
Post by: Solari on May 02, 2013, 12:31:20 AM
At any given moment, #thalmarkin is more active than at least eleven other channels (including the main channel—#battlemaster) combined. I have no idea what that signifies, but considering it's mostly talking about Noldorin's french girlfriend (lately) or borderline-childish sexual innuendo (frequently), it must not be anything bad. This is why Thal is sometimes jokingly referred to as an IC clan by the people who play there. It's a joke. Seriously, don't even try to read too much into it.

So, consider this a challenge for those of you who are maybe the chatty type but not especially proficient with IRC, or really active on BM and thus capable of being on IRC, to find a way to connect with other people that play in your realm(s). It's pretty rewarding.

My thoughts about this:

We talk about everything at IRC, from french girlfriends to music, softwares and pets. At Thal, this is easier, once at the others channels people are mostly talking about the game, problems, strategies.
Why is it easier at Thal? Idk. Maybe because the two guys that started to call us there, Gondolin and Lorgan, started it saying: we are not rich, we are not strong, we don't have many regions but we are the funniest realm at al BM. And they did not lie.
Well, all this changed. We have more regions, we have more money, more nobles but we are still a funny realm.

I put it all as being consequences of the way we (they) started it.
Maybe.
Hard to know for sure.

It has Outer Tilog's penchant for intrigue and crazy characters, without the more fantastic elements such as werewolves and such. Beyond the wizard, whose rp as such is supported in game mechanics via the scrolls, we're all just normal human nobles. Who fight with each other and somehow manage to still be coherent against Melhed.

And just to avoid this becoming a Thalmarkin lovefest, the intent of my post was to suggest a way for players to connect with and engage people they play with on different levels. The game's a community. Being a part of the community enriches your own experience.  :)

This was, in fact, why I added the "Chat" button on the main navbar.

And we love it Tim :)

That button brought a few more to chat. The main channel is always full now, so, thank you :D

Directing people to some channels would probably help. The main channel often has chatting but not always and many realms chats are silent so then what? That's why I find chatty channels. Lurians and Thalmarkin are the two I generally go to now.

Yes, but we are all at main channel too. Or almost all. There are a few who refuse to go there :p
We can always start chats.
I try, but I don't succeed.
Many times not even at Thal channel.

I'm at irc mainly at work, so i idle a lot... and ofcourse i hop there at sometimes during weekend... but then i'm prolly drunk and people hastily retreat and leave IRC before i start to babble and post silly music videos :P

But... IRC really improves your gaming experience, you get almost immediate replies to your questions and you get to know fellow players... and if your realm chatty is active you get to know players of your realmmates well too.

Back the old days, all Darkan leaders were at IRC, we crunched numbers and made a lot planning at irc along with chitty chatty... Same was with Tara and CE some extent too... I guess that was one of the reasons those realms were pretty dominate at beginning of Atamara... now they are dominating thrhough brute force :P No irc needed :)

IRC is the enemy.

I'm gonna go sit on IRC for 10 minutes or so and troll.

Any time I log in I get molested by a puppet chicken or something else random, so I never really log onto the BM IRC

because it hurts my brain.

You just need to ignore this and start talking. Its what we all do. Or you think he doesn't do it to all of us? Although I need to say that recently I have been offered flowers :)

Why use IRC? Why not just speak in the game? Wont IRC just divert players from actual BM?

Speaking ingame is like playing the football match, talking on IRC is like reminiscing about the match with your mates over a beer.

I've been trying to get people to stop being rude to new IRCers for years.

People like Stabbity don't seem to realize that their offensive behaviour might not be simply dismissed by people who haven't been exposed to it for years.

I guess to them, it's just far more important that they be allowed to continue their stupid, immature little "d'hur-hur-hur"-inducing pranks than it is to make sure that new people on IRC feel welcomed and included.

I've tried to find the family but he either deleted it or is in another island.
Seriously Stabbity, one think is to play with us that know and will ignore it.
Another is to make this with someone you never saw before.

This. And there isn't a lot of IC stuff happening on IRC. The forums serve a similar purpose to IRC, but good luck finding a thread specific to a realm or war that hasn't been crapped up.

BM doesn't have an IC chat function.

IRC is good, for many reasons and I can least a few:

+ Players can get to now the player, not only the char
+ Players can have their questions answered in real time
+ Players can share jokes, make fun of themselves, have fun together
+ Players can share information about the game
+ Players can RP in real time and later post it to the game
All this, and I am sure there are many others, improve the game, don't divert from it.

- Players can troll other Players
- Players can get angry with other Players
- Players can confused the player with the char (some players act as their chars at IRC which is extremely weird)

I can share a weird experience from another game. People used msn instead of IRC. We tried IRC but didn't work.
There, everyone talks IC even at msn probably because there is a tavern IG that is a chat for 7 people only (but you can have lots of taverns). At the tavern, you are supposed to be IC but not at MSN. But this is a characteristic of this specific game and is not good, not good at all. When those people came to Facebook they did the same. They act as their chars at Facebook. Each of them created first a game account and later a personal account.
We had good times at msn, we had parties and we did good RP there too but what happen is that the RP stays at the MSN, were almost never posted to the game. The game doesn't have a good message system like BM. No "send to all realm" opiton so, people use forum to RP. That's why I had antagonism against forum before. Forum for me was just a really bad experience.

Exactly why I don't use IRC. For a start, if people behave on there like they do on these forums (and in-game at times) then it's a waste of time and effort just for aggression, rudeness, douchebaggery and the like. A pity, really, as I'm sure they're in the minority - but as always, it's the minority who spoil things for the majority.

They don't, fortunately. IRC often has its own lexicon, culture, etc. No excuse for rudeness, but it might help explain why a lot of people seem like jerks.

I apologize if I gave the wrong impression, but this isn't the case at all. The vast majority of the time, IRC is, at least for me, by far the friendliest OOC interaction I get with other players.

It's just that some of the in-jokes amongst the long-time IRCers can seem offensive and/or rude to people new to chatting in that medium.

One fight at IRC, or one bad discussion, or even one person being rude, to say the best, is not a reason to say IRC is not good and to avoid it.

You will find bad people and good people everywhere. You probably have people like this at your work, your school, your neighbor and you don't stop doing things because of them. You just ignore them.

So, no, don't tell me IRC is not good because of this. Is not enough to avoid all the good things we can have there. And we have. Lots, tons, thousands of good moments and a few of bad ones. Even Stabbity can provide lots of good moments.

You know what?
I see many of us here all day, reading the forum, looking for updates, looking for answers, answers that could be given in real time at IRC. All those arguments about "being trolled" or anything else doesn't really convince me.
People have some other reasons to avoid IRC and its ok.
Some like it, some doesn't. No one need to be there.
I will still think its delicious and will still miss the ones that aren't there.

Speaking ingame is like playing the football match, talking on IRC is like reminiscing about the match with your mates over a beer.

I started playing and went to the IRC after I found the wiki didn't answer all my questions on how to play.

I was keen to learn and asked lots of questions. I was invited to make a new Noble in a realm where I could be helped and tutored. I did and as annoying as my questions might be, I have, I think, made a contribution in this realm and I have learned so much from these players. I enjoy this aspect of the game now that I understand more. The politics and history and reasons can be more confusing then the mechanics at times.

I'm learning the rules, getting answers and being helped on IRC, thanks to all these kind players. I can ignore the trolls and have gotten to know some really nice players. I have had some good laughs and largely enjoy interacting on there. But most of all I am a more confident player.

IRC has been an integral part of my Battlemaster-experience pretty much since I began playing it. I'll admit I won't come over as nice to many people at all times but that really bothers me little. Recently I've also decided to hang out in #thalmarkin, since I heard it was more crowded than #battlemaster. Oh and of course, I'm owner of the channel, which allows me to sometimes slightly change the topic to annoy Lorgan.

Today we had 38 nicknames logged at IRC, main channel.
I don't remember so many in a normal day. Last time we had a full channel was when Tom was there before the huge changes IC.
I think is a good thing, to have more people there and some new players seems to like it too.

To be honest have been noticing this on the last days.
Even Thalmarkin channel went silent if we don't have a war to fight, or don't have someone there babbling...
