Feature Requests / Re: Dwilight Character Limit
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:05:28 AM »
Colonies are a risk. It is rare that a realm ever has such a glut of nobles that they can spare those needed for a colony AND maintain the regions left behind. In my opinion that is why they aren't attempted more often. The player base seems so risk adverse. So many times I see a possible war go on the back burner, cause the realm decides they can't win. No one colonises or expands because they don't have the nobles, yet without dynamic and exciting actions like that it is unlikely they will ever attract the nobles needed for their plans. Look at Arcaea, it is powerful now, but that road to power saw it almost destroyed several times, and even now we walk a delicate line of ensuring the diplomatic support from other realms while pursuing our wars. A colony effort is now underway, which will no doubt result in Arcaea lacking the nobles to effectively control all their regions, and also weakening their numerical advantage against those realms that are hostile to Arcaean goals. More risks like this are needed if we truly want to see dynamic continents.

Alluran was present on both BT and the colonies, but I'm not sure how significant it was on either continent.

Lore is a good read, and can be interesting. However no amount of Lore will make a religion appealing to players on its own. It certainly can be a good tool for making a religion interesting, and great recruitment tool, but unless you've got dedicated players, lively discussion, a way for everyone to feel like they contribute and a long term goal(s), the religion is likely to fail. A successful religion can exist without deep Lore quite easily, and the same goes for realms really.

I believe Tom has said he would prefer a focus on European style realms, which is why Asian and African type realms are kind of rare. Arcachon has the whole Clan Lords thing going on, which seemed interesting.

If he wasn't cute, how would he have ever won the hand of the lovely Edara?

what you mean there is RISK to the war. Well that is something unusual for the average BM realm.

Update is complete. Just some quick things

  • Not sure how this will look on any version of IE, column count is not supported
Opera hasn't rolled out their support for column count property to the best of my knowledge, but it is comming
  • Opera hasn't rolled out their support for column count property to the best of my knowledge, but it is comming
  • I tweaked things like size of the columns, number of columns for each island. It would probably be nice if the template could handle that sort of thing on its own.

One reason we lose people is they expect instant action—or instant chat.  I've seen new people send a message and leave 5 minutes later.

This is my experience as well. Battlemaster is closer to a PBEM game in terms of activity required compared to your standard web game. It is a niche game, their is no avoiding that issue. The main reason I'm given when new players leave is simply bored. As a new knight they often don't have the opportunity to engage in the politics and other factors which really make this game fun, they set up their estates, then wait for orders to click the travel button twice a day.

Nothing, you get no message no penalty. You can get stuck in that region, if you keep hitting a toll when trying to leave. Some quick hunting or selling some common items usually fixes that though.

Feature Requests / Re: Ability to move militia
« on: March 05, 2011, 11:38:56 PM »
What I proposed couldn't be used as a mobile force due to the penalties to CS and movement speed. The only use to be to save valuable units from being decommissioned, or languishing in the capital.

To me these are just some of the risk involved in using militia. If we make it easier to mitigate these risks, then it is possible the game balance will be thrown off. I guess this is a bigger problem on Dwilight where military units are much more valuable.

agreed, 1 character limit on all islands would be interesting. I maintain that one of the reason Dwilight IS fun is the low noble count to the land available, and the complete absence of the quiet 2nd characters who's only job is to prop up realm control.

the whole POINT of militia is that it is NOT mobile. You have nobles to provide mobile defense forces.
