So, its now a few hours into April fools day and the only suspect I see for this years prank is The simultaneous IN CHARACTER invasion of every Battle Master Contient by Netherworld.
I'd like to go on record as saying this was not a good joke. First of all I assume this means the whole set up of daimons threatening the other continents months ago was part of the joke, which I believe violates April Fools day etiquette. Further more, since many of us are in different time zones the joke came through when it was still March 31st. Many of us took it seriously and started roleplaying the incident. I assume there will need to be some in character explanation, like daimons playing a prank on us or something, which is silly.
All in all I don't think this was a harmless joke as it messed a lot of us up roleplay wise. Why couldn't you just claim the system was ruined by the updates or something?
-
Who said this was a joke?
Maybe the joke is that we all thought it was one ???
-
I did say "if this is a joke".
-
IF it's a joke (probably it is) it's a really bad one because too IG and ruined the atmosphere
ELSE IF it's not a joke, bye bye Battlemaster and welcome HumansVsDaimons
-
Well one part of the joke is obviously the wiki
-
Yes clearly the wiki will not stay the way it is.
I've heard that some regions already have portals and takeovers, so that makes this what, half a joke?
That's sort of like punching someone in the face then saying it's just a joke.
If the joke is that it's real and we're all outraged at the idea that its a joke then that's actually pretty clever.
-

I suspect the invasion will only start in kind if beluterra falls.
-
We can hope it's a joke. The timing is suggestive in that regard.
But I'm inclined to agree that it's not a great joke to an extent. This type of event has some fairly serious RP implications... Of course maybe that's how Tom wants it. The other islands have been basically ignoring the BT Invasions for years. Might this put a stop to that?
-
If it's not a joke, then choosing this time to go through with it only really confuses the playerbase, and that's just unfair. Seems like a bad decision either way, but we can't know for sure yet.
-

Ignoring how? It's not like they can send aid.
-
Sure they can. They can solicit volunteers to emigrate. They can also take the possibility that the Invasions will one day come to their island seriously and lay the groundwork for their defenses by creating guilds, collecting portal stones, making treaties, etc. Bedwyr was trying to do just that with Manifest Path. From what I have seen, IC no one on the other islands, with the exception of Dwilight, takes the possibility of an Invasion even remotely seriously.
-
Sending volunteers to emigrate is limited by maximum nobles. I for one already have a character on Beluterra.

On BT, maximum is two unpaused characters. I have three, granted two are paused. 8)

Maybe they shouldn't? I only have one character on BT for a reason.
I expect (and I remind you that this is based entirely on conjecture) that it'll be a pseudo-invasion, to show what's at stake, but which will be quite easily defeated. I think it's more there to show that Tom's willing to do it rather than to actually start an invasion.
-
Huh...?
This is actually great! If it's a joke it's the best evah ;D
If it's not - wow 8)
But whatever, I can roll with it - first time BM's brought a huge smile from me in a long time.
-
It is in the nature of all but the most shallow of jokes that some people enjoy them and some don't. Especially in this day and age, you probably can't make a joke without offending someone. People have not only lost the ability to laugh about themselves, more importantly they've lost the ability to laugh about others without feeling guilty.
!@#$ political correctness.
-
Don't know why people are all pissed about the daimon invasion. Should have expected a joke around April 1st. Just enjoy the damn thing people. Don't take it too seriously jeez.

Who was offended? The joke was too in game in my view. That's the only critic I read about it, don't think someone get offended by this
-
I actualy wish this is real. Think it's a great idea to have this as an event, not as a joke.
Anyway, are we supose to take this seriosly IC? Some of us already have. So what now?
-
As I mentioned in other threads, I felt that the whole thing was a tad too overdone for an SMA island.
I think it's fine on the other islands because BM is a SILLY game sometimes. Silly in the Monty Python sense. I don't really get the joke, but I can see how people might find it funny.
Maybe it's the difference between European and American humor. Americans tend to enjoy physical schadenfreude (getting hit in the balls, slime on doorknobs, etc.) Europeans seem to prefer to troll people psychologically. That's just my observation. :p
Keep calm and carry on. :)
-
I'm disapointed to hear it's a joke.

Now we make fun of you for being gullible. That's the whole point of April Fools you know. ;D
Also, the forums are now "Netherworld Slave Islands". :'(
-
How are we supose to motivate this IC?
We were all halucinating?

Wait, so you're telling me, my offering the 2nd Son on Atamara, my whole city, all of CE, the first born son of the Consul, and 10k gold to spare me, was all for nothing?
-
blabla stop complaining be creative.

Make Overlord out to be a big fat pussy who didn't have the balls to go through with it. You know, like we all do on BT.
-
the family page when you log in is now called the Slave Register ;D
-
Probably trying to scare us with fancy lights.

Good catch, I missed that

They don't apear on diplomatic relationships.

The new dinamic maps being placed on the other islands is not a joke?

The new dinamic maps being placed on the other islands is not a joke?
No, it was coming anyways. The old one is still available under "political map", though.
-
Did not notice the slave register on the character page when loging in. Nor the red dot for that matter.

When was that screenshot taken? Evora is just fine now. ???

It's only one day.

Welcome to the worthless collection of worthless knowledge of the worthless human race.
While this used to be the Wiki of the human race in the world called BattleMaster, with the end of human reign on this world, it is now the Wiki of the Netherworld slaves and servants, humanity included.
All hail the Netherworld !
Original content has been preserved for the time being and will be cleansed together with your entire weakling race.

Right. Thus forcing everyone to consider the idea a bit more seriously in the future.
-
I'm really enjoying this :D My AT character is living it up (Magna Serpaesism dissolves -> netherworld invades Atamara!!! -> omfs#hgv@* THE SQUID IS LOOSE This is of course CE's fault...)
-
I hope some fighting breaks out soon.
-
2012 - nothing
For 2012, there was no April Fool's. Personal reasons made Tom unable to play a prank that year. Many players mistook the Netherworld invasion of the wiki, forum and, in fact, all the game worlds, for an April Fool's prank.
-
I, for one, welcome our new Daimonic Overlords. All hail the Netherworld! ;D
-

!@#$ political correctness.
What does this have to do with political correctness? I'm annoyed because it screws with our roleplay.
-
I would actually really like this to stay. It's going to cause interesting situations for a lot of people - like on EC, do Fontan and Westmoor put things aside to deal with the Daimons? Or will they continue fighting while the daimons ravage both their lands?
-
What does this have to do with political correctness? I'm annoyed because it screws with our roleplay.
If your roleplay is so fragile that an unexpected event screws with it, then it must not have been a very flexible roleplay.
-
I think the best way to play it off would be to make the invasion itself real but the mass numbers of CS like in that screencap a hoax the daimons perpetrated to try and appear as if they had unlimited forces in an attempt to get everyone to surrender immediately.
-

Fragile? God I hate when people just throw around rhetoric on internet forums for no reason.
It's this simple. The prank was in character. We responded to it in character. When it all goes "poof" we'll have to have an in character explanation for why that happened and in SMA worlds that's going to be a very thin and crummy explanation.
-

This is actually beautiful.
-

Sorry, I misunderstood. Usually when people say "it screws with our roleplay", they mean that they have had some kind of roleplay thread going on, and the event in question disrupts it in some manner. (And yes, this has happened several times, from different people.)

a) How do you know it's going to go "poof"?
b) If it does go "poof", how do you know it's not going to provide you an IC explanation?
c) If it does not, and you came up with IC explanations for its appearance, can you not also come up with IC explanations for its disappearance?
-

a) Because Tom as much as acknowledged that it's a joke a few posts back. It's a pretty strong implication.
b) I'd be interested to know what explanation they can provide that wont be a crummy one. In some game worlds they could simply say "It turns out the daimon invasion was nothing more then the result of hallucinogenic mushrooms being accidentally mixed into the realm's wine supply". But in SMA worlds that's just stupid. The only good explanation would be if the invasion was in some way real, like if Daimons really did open portals to the other continents and that at some point they may actually try to invade them but at this time they didn't really have the resources and were just doing it for show to try and get a quick surrender.
c) basically the same problem as b

Because you (or Tom) couldn't possibly say that the Daimons managed to open swirling hell-portals in all the other dimensions, but then some brave and unnamed soul managed to sacrifice himself in some unspecified manner to close them?
-

That could work too, but that would mean the invasion was somewhat real in character. That daimons invading other continents (all BM game worlds are in the same dimension) is a genuine possibility.
-
... just because it's a joke ooc doesn't make it a joke ic.
-
I remember when as a joke there was introduced this wacky new character class.
The Courtier.
Sometimes jokes can turn into VERY SRS BZNS.
From an IC perspective my character doesn't know about April Fool's Day, so I'm just going with it. Daimon invasion? Aha, just as according to the Prophecy! Repent, sinners, for the end is at hand! ;)

I think you've not been paying very close attention to the BT invasion, if you aren't already expecting that.
-

I actually have been paying attention. When I started this post I mentioned that the daimons threatened to invade the other continents months ago.
They also claimed they wouldn't do so until they'd destroyed Beluterra, which suggests they're not ready to launch all out assaults on the other continents yet.

c) If it does not, and you came up with IC explanations for its appearance, can you not also come up with IC explanations for its disappearance?
Overblown reports from superstitious peasants.
Done.
-
They just all of a sudden all started to report mass daimon invasions, and portals, and fabricated scout reports, and fabricated a letter from 6th son, all on a whim, on every single continent, all over said continents. Yeah, that's a great explanation.
-
Also I don't like this because its also a disappointment. The past jokes were all claims of some horrible new change that were supposed to make us angry, then we realize what day it is and are relieved and laugh (The items shop last year was great I bought it completely).
This is the opposite, it's an awesome development that a bunch of people are now begging Tom to make real, and now if it turns out to be totally fake we'll be disappointed.
-
(x) you are overthinking this
-
Well then, either its an invasion or it isn't. Everyone wants to declare temporary cease-fires to fight the daimons, which is great, if they actually come. I'm peeved because it is ambiguous - either it is a great invasion that's going to define everyone's gameplay for the foreseeable future, or it's a joke on us and our characters. Not knowing which makes it frustrating.

Weaklings/good guys. You should exploit the situation to get rid of your enemies rather then make peace ;)
-
I reckon this should be locked now. Tom's confirmed it was an April Fools in the Announcements forum, and he's had a few things to say about the conduct of people regarding it too.
-
Since Tom's confirmed that the possibility of Daimons invading other continents is not off the table, I for one would like to treat this in character as more then just a hoax or random rumors. Maybe it could be an early attempt by the daimons to establish a new portal system.
-
Thanks for reminding me. I wanted to put that into the announcement and forgot.
-
Take a deep breath... and enjoy!
Portals seem to have opened in several places but they closed in a day. Perhaps the Daimons didn't have the power to sustain them all at once, perhaps someone managed to defeat them, perhaps it was just an intimidation act, perhaps it is something entirely different. The point is: our characters don't know why it happened, just that it did, and are possibly very scared about it. For all they know they may return at any moment, or this could have been a hoax, or whatever. There are many ways to play it out, and not finding a rational explanation? Yep, it's one of them.
-
I respectfully disagree Tom. Some players are from eastern cultures and do not even know what April Fools is. It's not fair to prank people when they have no clue that April 1st is "special".
-
I am sure they have something similar.
-
We celebrate "April's fool" (el día de los inocentes) the 28th of December, but I am not offended or anything of the like. Not sure what the big problem is... It's a joke, and if it is so seriously affecting you then you should consider rethinking your relationship with the game.
-
The portals are still on the dinamic map from what I see. IC they still exist.
-

This falls squarely into the "you can't do anything these days without offending someone". And I refuse to bow to that political correctness bull!@#$. If you didn't know what April Fool's is, then you can learn.
And if there is something similar in eastern cultures, I'd be thrilled to hear about it and if I like it, I will pick up that custom as well.
-
Will the portals be removed from the dinamic map soon?
-
Will the portals be removed from the dinamic map soon?
They are. If you still see them, try hitting the refresh button.
-
Still there and won't go away.
-
Still there and won't go away.
Ok, I see 6 portals on Beluaterra. I assume these won't go away. I also think they appeared a few days prior to april 1st, so they look like actual IG events to me.
I can confirm they are gone on both Dwilight and EC.
-
My bad. Due to the Blight graphics, BT requires a different update process. It'll be updated soon.
-
Well, The only thing I didn't like of all this was IT WASN'T REAL!!!
I think the game would be better if things like this could happen from time to time! Monsters than only in singular combat could be destroyed, Monsters invasions, Dragons, tales of relics to be found, etc
A bit more RP!!! ;D
-

BM is great also because it's mostly player Vs player but there is some room for players Vs gamemasters (lots in BT, less in Dwi). It'd be bad imho if all islands turn to be players Vs gamemasters.
I heard lot of people who wants Netherworld attacking everywhere maybe because things in their realm are boring right now but low fun it's players' fault, it cannot been solved by gamemaster
-
I like PvP!... the things I said could happen sometimes, not every day nor every year!...
See it as a 'reality-touch'... The real medieval Europe had pests, Mongol and Viking invasions, crusades, knights looking for the grial, the longinus lance, and others, unusual bad years than created massive hunger, etc... In the real medieval times was not all PvP either!... he,he...
-
Mongol and Viking invasions,
BM has Averothian, Ibladeshian, Sirionites, Cagilan invasions.
knights looking for the grial, the longinus lance, and others,
Others such as the Book of Daimon Suffering?
unusual bad years than created massive hunger, etc... In the real medieval times was not all PvP either!... he,he...
Also known as "The year when D'Hara bought everything". Ok, maybe that one hasn't happened yet; I foresee it will.
PvP vs PvE is not a matter of the types of things that can happen, it's a matter of the way they happen.
-
Yes, you are right!... well, maybe not in the invasions... the Viking and Mongol invasions where more like a enormous undead horde! not an 'usual' war!... but this is not the point...
I think a few PvE could generate much more, and more interesting PvP!... in short is not PvP against PvE, is PvE as a way to better and encourage PvP... wherever, I think maybe this is not the treat to treat this.
-
BM is a PvP game. The PvE elements it has (random monsters, etc.) are tiny and only there to provide a small element of uncertainty.
If your realm/island is boring, it's your job to spice it up.

The only way this April Fools day could have been better...is if it included the instant death of every ruler on every Island... ;) now THAT would be funny!
-

Respect of other cultures does not require the suppression of one's own culture.
While we have many things to be ashamed of, innocent traditions like April fool's ain't one of them.

Fair point. But I received some private OOC messages thanking me for "spoiling" April Fools for them. They would have done some irreversible IC actions that they would have regretted on April 2nd.

I see no reason to disregard these events IC. It scared us players into fearing the worst. Nobody said that these events should be ignored IC, and that our characters should pretend they never happened. They *are* anchored in existing RP about the threat of the invasion spilling to the other continents after defeating BT, and Overlord is boasting about having just finished some ritual on BT as well. Plus it happens right after some advies apparently, if the Zuma truly know (and tell the truth), activated some portal stones on Dwilight.
Acting on it IC seems perfectly legit to me.
-
Hey, it got me a bunch of Church of Humanity members willing to become Templars (church soldiers/knights) and Clerics (priests) and claim our prayers to the Divine managed to push away the daimon scouting forces.

How about we just sink BT, and get rid of the Daimons that way? If humanity pulls it off right, we could drown all the Overlord and all his sons!!!
-
I admit, it would be amusing.

Pray a little harder on BT?
You're all going to burn/drown/suffocate/<insert other cause of death here>.
And Malos was deported to the Colonies, so he won't go with you! *evil laugh*
